Chapter 110: Chapter 109: Unexpected Meeting
When the results were published, they shocked the world.
However, this pharmacist remained extremely low-profile. The public knew nothing about their name, gender, or age.
But regardless, they had saved countless lives, more than living up to the title of the Medicine King.
"I’m sorry, Mom," Xu Zhao Yu said, feeling deeply apologetic. "Bai Zhou brought this news back. I’ll find a way to keep asking around."
"You’re very thoughtful, Zhao Yu." Old Madam Xu patted her hand. "Out of all of you, you’re the most thorough in everything you do. It’s just your heart... If only we could find a doctor to cure your illness, then we could finally be at ease."
Xu Zhao Yu, however, felt miserable. "It’s my fault. If I didn’t have this congenital heart disease and hadn’t been despised by my biological parents, they wouldn’t have swapped me and my fourth brother. I..."
She couldn’t help but start crying by the end of her sentence.
Old Madam Xu frowned. "It’s all in the past now. Don’t say such things anymore!"
"Mom, even though I’m not your biological daughter, in my heart, you are my only mother," Xu Zhao Yu whispered, hugging her. "No matter if you drive me away in the future or not, my feelings will never change."
Old Madam Xu was absolutely elated by her sweet words. "It’s still better to have a daughter. Of course, one like you. Not like that little brat who does nothing but piss people off all day long."
Outside, the sun was shining brightly, and the wind blew the falling flowers.
"Hey, hey, hey! Changying, stop, stop, stop!" Ming Chengli yelled. "Dad’s neck is about to snap! It’s really going to snap!"
Only then did Shi Changying let go and turn to look at him.
Meeting her gaze, Ming Chengli felt as though their roles had been completely reversed. He coughed. "Changying, don’t look at Dad like that. You’re scaring me."
Shi Changying asked, "Why don’t you want to join the company?"
Ming Chengli let out a confused noise. "Because I don’t know anything about medicine."
"No, you have to go in," Shi Changying said.
"I’m not cut out for business, and I have no interest in it either." Ming Chengli waved his hand dismissively.
Shi Changying hummed. "So, you’re just going to hand over what rightfully belongs to you on a silver platter?"
Ming Chengli froze. His hands subconsciously dropped to his sides, standing as rigidly as a scolded elementary schooler. He pursed his lips. "Mainly, Dad just doesn’t have the time. Even though things have been a bit more relaxed lately, you know I’m always running around everywhere. I can’t just stop."
"You still can’t give in. If you yield a single step, you’ll end up yielding every step," Shi Changying said coldly. "In the end, you’ll be left with nothing—including your life."
Ming Chengli just laughed. "How could I be left with nothing? Don’t I still have you?"
Shi Changying’s heart skipped a beat, but she didn’t let it go to her head. "I’m talking to you about serious business. Don’t get sentimental."
"Changying, I know you’re doing this for my own good, and Dad is very happy." Ming Chengli patted her head. "Just get into a good university, and Dad... Dad will be able to rest easy for the rest of his life."
The sense of loneliness and dead silence clinging to him was almost overflowing, but when his eyes landed on her, it all melted into pure affection.
Shi Changying clenched her fists and released them. "Are you hiding something from me?"
"Absolutely not!" Ming Chengli said with absolute certainty. "Dad even told you exactly how many pennies are left in his bank account!"
Shi Changying stared at him. "True. But if I ever find out you’ve hidden something from me..."
Ming Chengli felt a chill run down his spine and couldn’t help but reach up to rub the back of his neck.
"But you cannot refuse to join the company." Shi Changying withdrew her murderous glare and said lightly, "It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand medicine. I’ll help you."
Truthfully, she didn’t understand it either.
However, when she read the pharmacy section of the Taichu Holy Scripture, she had memorized quite a few prescriptions. She also remembered which illnesses these prescriptions corresponded to, so they might just come in handy.
However, since the existences of the other eleven of the Twelve Masters of Mingjing had been completely erased—aside from Pei Jiang—then Ning Liuyu, the Medicine Girl, would certainly have left no trace in the history books either.
Shi Changying massaged her temples and let out a long breath.
The events of the past four hundred years truly made her want to kill someone.
Ming Chengli, however, misinterpreted her reaction. He raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, alright. I’ll listen to my daughter. I’ll go to the company."
Only then was Shi Changying satisfied. "I’ll treat you to milk tea."
That afternoon at Jianghuai International Airport.
A woman dressed in ordinary casual clothes and a beret walked out with the flow of the crowd.
Upon spotting her, the assistant waved his hand in pleasant surprise. "Miss Ning, over here!"
The woman gave a slight nod and handed her suitcase to him. "Thank you for your hard work."
"You just returned to the country, Miss Ning, so we were worried you might still be a bit unaccustomed to things," the assistant said with a smile. "The director notified us early on to make sure we host you properly."
The woman smiled faintly. "I’m not that fragile."
The assistant loaded the suitcase into the car. "Please get in, Miss Ning."
The outside world certainly had no idea that the pharmacist who had invented the new drug and saved countless lives two years ago was actually a twenty-five-year-old young woman.
"We are also aware of the purpose of your visit," the assistant continued. "There are three pharmaceutical companies in Jianghuai, and the most famous one is, naturally, the Xu Group."
The woman nodded. "Yes, the Xu Group has developed quite well. I’ll go take a look."
"The director mentioned that when you’re developing medications, you also like to research their various flavors," the assistant said with a laugh. "But as they say, good medicine tastes bitter."
The woman chuckled. "That’s true. Good medicine tastes bitter, but if you can avoid the bitterness, why must you force yourself to swallow it?"
After getting off the highway, the car passed through a plain. It was sparsely populated with very few vehicles on the road. To protect Miss Ning, they specifically avoided heavily congested routes.
However, through the rearview mirror, the driver suddenly noticed several cars speeding toward them.
The vehicles were moving incredibly fast, looking very much as though they were attempting to outflank them.
The assistant’s expression shifted slightly. "Hold on tight, Miss Ning! I’m afraid your whereabouts have been leaked!"
The woman’s gaze turned sharp, and she sneered. "There certainly are plenty of people who want my life."
SCREECH!
The car made a sharp turn and accelerated.
After temporarily losing the vehicles that had suddenly appeared, the assistant said urgently, "Miss Ning, get out of the car first! I’ll have someone else come and pick you up. Hurry up and leave, we’ll lead these cars away!"
The woman didn’t refuse. She immediately got out of the car and found a place to hide herself.
The car started up again, and the trailing vehicles stayed hot on its heels, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake.
The woman furrowed her brows. As if realizing something, she immediately turned off her phone.
But it was too late. A second group of people had already tracked her disappearing phone signal and arrived at the location.
These men were all bulging with muscles, standing nearly six feet three inches tall with ferocious tattoos covering their exposed skin.
The young man leading the group smiled faintly. "It’s been a long and exhausting journey for you, Miss Ning. We’d like to invite you over as our guest."
"A guest?" The woman glared at him coldly. "Is this how you invite people?"
"It’s rare for us to get a chance to see you, Miss Ning, so we had to resort to this method." The young man’s smile deepened. "After all, who knows when you’ll make an appearance next. Please, Miss Ning."
The woman calmly surveyed her surroundings, calculating her chances of escape. But she was completely surrounded on all sides, boxed in without a single gap to slip through.
Suddenly, a lazy voice drifted down from above.
"Hey, a bunch of grown men bullying a little girl—do you have no shame?"
Ning Liuyu sharply raised her head.
Shi Changying was sitting in a tree, gazing down at the brawny young men from above.
