The wind howled past his ears as the Black Stone Mountain Range transformed into a continuous stretch of shadows under the moonlight.
Lightning flew at an incredible speed, the electricity crackling around its body tearing through the night sky.
Raylo gazed down upon his territory. The towering silhouette of Black Stone City was just a blur, and in the distance, scattered torches still flickered at the construction site.
Taking advantage of his free time tonight, he was heading to see Avril.
Lightning flew so fast that a journey of several hours was cut down to about one.
A solitary mountain peak appeared on the horizon. It was taller than all the surrounding peaks, its summit flat as if sliced clean off by a giant sword.
That was the Observatory.
A translucent Magic Shield enveloped the entire mountaintop, shimmering under the moonlight.
Lightning didn’t slow down and flew straight into it.
The Magic Shield rippled, silently splitting open to allow the Thunder Dragon to pass through.
The moment Lightning landed smoothly, Raylo saw a Giant Dragon lying not far away.
It was a Red Dragon, its body slightly larger than Lightning’s, its dark red scales like burning embers.
It seemed to be napping, its massive head resting on its foreclaws, its chest rising and falling rhythmically.
Raylo recognized it.
This was the Red Dragon that had once stood guard at the Magic Tower of the Legendary Mage, Master Wendel—the "Melting Furnace."
’Master Wendel is here too?’
’Is he here to visit Mage Delin?’
A flicker of doubt crossed Raylo’s mind as he jumped down from Lightning’s back.
He gestured for Lightning to be quiet, then walked toward the building in the center of the Observatory.
The door was ajar.
He pushed the door open, and a warm magical glow immediately spilled out.
The inside of the tower was spacious.
In the center of the tower, two figures were sitting cross-legged, apparently in Meditation.
One of them was Avril. She was wearing a simple white Mage Robe, her eyes closed and her expression focused.
The other figure was Lillian.
She was wearing an exquisite Magic Robe, her long hair casually draped over her back.
’Why is she here?’
As if hearing the door open, Lillian’s eyelashes fluttered, and she opened her eyes.
When those amber eyes saw Raylo, they instantly lit up.
"Brother!"
She cried out happily, leaping up from the floor and bounding over like a little deer. She jumped right onto Raylo and clung to him.
"You little rascal, what are you doing here?"
Raylo asked.
Avril opened her eyes as well. When she saw Raylo, a gentle smile graced her face.
She stood up, walked over to Raylo, and naturally straightened his collar, which Lillian had ruffled.
"You’re here."
"Yeah. I came to see you."
Raylo’s gaze shifted between his wife and sister.
"How did you two end up together?"
Lillian slid off him and grabbed his arm.
"I came to see Avril! And to exchange some pointers on Magic."
"Exchanging pointers?"
Raylo raised an eyebrow.
Avril explained with a smile.
"Lillian hit a bottleneck in her Meditation, and since I’m studying Spiritual Magic, I was able to give her some advice."
"Oh, I see."
Raylo nodded, then looked at Lillian again.
"Where’s your teacher? Is Master Wendel here too?"
He pointed outside.
"That Red Dragon outside belongs to him, right?"
Hearing this, Lillian’s eyes shone even brighter. She puffed out her small chest, her face filled with pride.
"Nope."
She shook her head.
"Now, it’s mine."
"Yours?"
Raylo was a little surprised.
"That’s right!"
Lillian nodded emphatically.
"My teacher gave it to me! We’ve already signed a Companion Contract, and I named it ’Blazing Flame’!"
A genius Mage, and now with a Red Dragon as a companion.
Watching his sister’s excitement, Raylo couldn’t help but feel happy for her.
"Then what about Master Wendel and Mage Delin?"
Raylo asked.
"Where are they?"
At the mention of this, the smiles on both Avril’s and Lillian’s faces faded a little.
Avril spoke up.
"My teacher... they’ve gone out."
"Gone out? Where to?"
"We don’t know the exact location."
There was a hint of worry in Avril’s voice.
"About two days ago, my teacher and Master Wendel left together."
"They said they were going deep into the Black Stone Mountain Range to investigate something."
Raylo frowned.
’Investigate something? What could possibly require two Legendary Mages to go together?’
Lillian picked up the conversation.
"Brother, have you noticed anything unusual in the Black Stone Territory recently?"
"Unusual?"
Raylo pondered.
"Nothing unusual, but I do have some good news."
"What good news, Brother?"
"Today, at the border between the Black Stone Territory and the Black Stone Mountain Range, I found a whale that fell out of a spatial rift!"
Raylo paused, then emphasized.
"A flying whale!"
Lillian and Avril exchanged a look.
Lillian said with some exasperation, "Brother, and you call that ’nothing unusual’?"
Lillian’s expression turned serious. "My teacher said that the space in the Black Stone Mountain Range has become very unstable recently, with spatial rifts appearing frequently."
Raylo nodded. ’It seems it’s not just on the border of my territory that spatial rifts are appearing. The space of the entire Black Stone Mountain Range is experiencing major fluctuations or changes.’
Avril continued the explanation.
"My teacher is worried that this might be a sign—a precursor to something much bigger."
"Master Wendel thinks so too, which is why they decided to find the cause together."
