Chapter 723 - 725: Grievance
Chapter 723: Chapter 725: Grievance
Gu Letian wanted to throw his arms around his uncle and pour out all the grievances he had suffered over the years, but seeing him in his official uniform, he didn’t quite dare to approach.
He raised a hand to wipe away his tears and snot before speaking in a thick, nasal voice. "Seventh Uncle, I have so much to tell you all."
"If there’s anything you want to know, ask the brothers," Gu Wenheng said, pointing to the nephews behind him. He really didn’t have the time to listen to his nephew’s life story right now. "You boys tell your eldest cousin all about what’s happened at home these past few years.
"By the way, have you started a family? If you have, bring your wife and children along too."
Given his age, he should already have a few children by now. Although he was his nephew, the man wasn’t actually that much younger than him.
A blush crept over Gu Letian’s face. He shook his head. "No, I haven’t settled down."
For years, he had been living meal-to-meal with mountain bandits. Sometimes he couldn’t even feed himself, let alone support a wife and children. Now that he had finally managed to save a little Silver, his only thought was to find his family; marriage hadn’t even crossed his mind.
Looking at the patches covering his clothes, Gu Wenheng sighed silently. "Then come back to the county town with us later. If you need to say your goodbyes, go let them know now. We probably won’t be coming back here again!"
He was definitely taking him home. Given the vast distance between the two places, Gu Wenheng was simply telling him the truth.
Gu Letian’s excitement slowly began to settle. "Seventh Uncle, how long will you be staying in the county town?"
Gu Wenheng glanced at the escorting officials beside him. "Probably a few more days."
After all, apart from this village, there were many other places he needed to inspect. Having allocated so much Silver, he had to make sure it was actually being put to good use.
Gu Letian breathed a sigh of relief. "Then can I leave in a few days too?"
Gu Wenheng didn’t mind such trivial matters at all. "Just arrange it however you see fit."
He couldn’t let a junior’s affairs interfere with his official duties, so Gu Wenheng began to stroll around the village.
Once all the adults had left, Gu Letian looked eagerly at the Gu Family Brothers. "How did our Seventh Uncle become an official? Tell me what’s happened at home all these years! Are Grandpa and Grandma doing well? How are my parents?"
The barrage of questions amused the Gu Family Brothers, and they grinned. It was wonderful—finally, their family was whole again without a single person missing.
Gu Benluo had been standing to the side, curiously observing this eldest cousin he was meeting for the first time. Seeing him fire off question after question, he finally spoke up. "Eldest Cousin, which one do you want us to answer first? It’s a long story, not something we can explain overnight."
Looking at his mature new cousin, Gu Letian reached out and patted his head, just as he used to do with his younger brothers. "I need you to answer all of them, one by one. I’ve been away from home for so long, and I’m desperate for news.
"Today is the happiest day of my life. I thought I might never see my family again in this lifetime, but this surprise came so suddenly.
"Little cousin, you haven’t told me your name yet."
"His name is Gu Benluo. Eldest Cousin, you can just call him Luo Luo," Gu Le Ping said, his eyes never leaving his cousin. "If I had bumped into you on the street, I really wouldn’t have dared to recognize you. How did you get so dark and burly?"
Gu Letian looked down at himself. "And I’ve grown taller too. Earlier, if I hadn’t thought Le Shun looked familiar, I wouldn’t have dared to recognize you either."
Everyone’s last impression of each other was from the year they fled the famine. Back then, they were all emaciated and covered in grime—a stark contrast to how they looked now.
Now, his brothers and cousins were all fair and clean-cut. Gu Lexi, in particular, was quite rotund, looking every bit the young master from a wealthy family.
The brothers gathered around, chattering animatedly until Gu Wenheng and the others were ready to leave, at which point they followed behind.
"Eldest Cousin, do you want to go say goodbye to them?" Gu Le Kai reminded Gu Letian, noticing the villagers still peering in their direction.
Gu Letian patted his shoulder and walked toward Yu Laoda.
In all his years here, the only person he owed a favor to was Yu Laoda.
"Boss," Gu Letian said, looking at Yu Laoda. "I’m leaving. Thank you for looking after me all these years. Take care of yourself."
"Congratulations on finding your family." Yu Laoda’s expression was a mix of complicated emotions. He never expected that such a taciturn man would be the first to break free from their ranks.
He had practically skyrocketed to the top. Presumably, he wouldn’t want to look back on his days as a mountain bandit ever again.
Yu Laoda had one redeeming quality: he was tactful. He understood that their statuses were no longer equal, so naturally, he wouldn’t make a scene. "I wish you all the best in the future."
Gu Letian smiled. "Things will get better for everyone. I just asked my Seventh Uncle, and he’ll be staying here for a few more days. I’ll come back to visit you all some other time."
Yu Laoda wanted to reach out and pat his shoulder as he usually did, but his hand froze in midair before quickly retracting. "Take care."
Over there, Gu Lexi was already rushing him. "Eldest Cousin, let’s go!"
Gu Letian nodded to Wu Xiaoliu and the others, then turned and walked away.
After the procession vanished from sight, Wu Xiaoliu smacked his lips and said, "It’s really strange. Just yesterday, he was struggling right alongside us, and today he’s jumped from rags to riches. I just asked Chief Chen about it, and Gu Letian’s family is no joke. Our great benefactor, Inspector General Mr. Gu, is his actual uncle! Do you think he’ll ever come back now that he’s left?"
Yu Laoda let out a self-deprecating chuckle. "With a place like ours, why would he ever come back?"
Although he had taken him in for so many years, the man had also done a lot of work for him. In fact, because Yu Laoda had favored him, the other brothers had subtly ostracized him.
"Alright, that’s his destiny. As for us, we should head back into the mountains while it’s still early. The only real thing we can rely on is making more Silver."
Yu Laoda wiped his face. "Life goes on. I’ll go call the others over."
Seeing Yu Laoda walk away, Boss Xie strolled over and laughed. "Old Yu is such a fool. He didn’t even use the chance to ask for some benefits."
Wu Xiaoliu rolled his eyes at him. "Why didn’t you say anything earlier? Bringing it up only after they’ve left... what a wimp."
Without bothering to give him another glance, he headed toward the mountain. Rather than wasting time bickering here, it was better to go check if the traps had caught anything.
Boss Xie was left speechless.
As they headed into the mountains, Tian Laimi and the others noticed that Gu Letian hadn’t followed them. Unable to hold back, they complained, "The boss is way too biased! I don’t know what’s so great about that kid. Look, he’s letting him slack off in the village again."
"He probably had some errands for him to run!" Mu Xi spoke up to defend Gu Letian once again.
