Chapter 3653: Somberskull’s Story
Chapter 3653: Somberskull’s Story
"Tell me about yourself as well," Somberskull asked before Alex had a chance to make his next move.
"Myself? I fear senior already knows about me," Alex said.
"I don’t believe I do. All I know is what I’ve heard about you from others. I still do not know, in particular, why the Storm God would be against you. Or how you have managed to evade him for so long despite him searching for you with an army beside him."
Alex could understand the interest everyone else showed in the relationship between him and the Storm God. After all, it made no sense for a god in the Celestial realm to hold any grievance against a mere Immortal. Especially when that Immortal was known to be the greatest alchemist of the younger generation.
"My apologies, but I cannot go into detail as to why the Storm God may be against me at the moment. But as to how I managed to evade him, it was simply by going to the beast realm, where I remained for a while."
Alex didn’t go into any more detail, not that he had to. The old man understood that he didn’t want to speak on that topic and let it be.
"And who is this friend of yours?" the old man asked, turning to Bladedance.
"My apologies, but I cannot answer that either. She is accompanying me, but does not wish to reveal her identity to anyone else."
The old man shook his head. "That’s perfectly fine. I will not force anyone who wishes not to be involved in this conversation."
Alex gave a thankful smile to the old man, feeling as though he understood the man a lot better now. He seemed like an upfront old man with nothing to hide. So, Alex continued asking him questions, trying to figure out more about him.
Somberskull had indeed been a part of the war for a long time. He had been born some 400 thousand years ago and had trained diligently for a long time before joining the war and dedicating his life to helping others.
Through a near-death experience, he had come to understand the Death Dao, which had been his strongest Dao at that point. He mixed his understanding of Death Dao along with his understanding of poisons to create a skill that quickly raised him through the ranks in the war.
And then, he came across Duskcorpse.
Despite both of them having the same Dao and thus the same knowledge, Duskcorpse’s understanding of Death Dao, and more importantly, its application, far exceeded anything the man had ever been able to do in his life.
So, he quickly followed Duskcorpse, learning from her. Duskcorpse had managed to make such a name for herself at that point that she had already brought along many other Death Dao users all on her own, before she was even given the title of the Death God.
Once she formed her cult, many of the people there, including Somberskull, had become Death Sages. It wasn’t until many millennia later, when Duskcorpse finally died, that the cult disbanded, each person leaving on their own.
Somberskull was all on his own for some time as well before he learned about the war coming to an end. The Demons were weakened and thus couldn’t fight back, so there was no more war.
When it ended, he came to the Sky God’s realm and formed his sect. It started off small, but over the course of nearly a hundred thousand years, it had grown to be its current size.
Alex listened to the man’s story with rapt attention, taking in each part with nary a vagrant thought. As he listened, almost no part of what had happened with the Death God or the Artifact God was in the story at all. There was no mention of the Sword God either, or any of the other gods who were involved with the Slayers.
As the old man finished telling them about himself, Alex thought of his questions.
"Is it true that when the recordings of the Fiend fighting the Undying God surfaced, the Death God helped with determining how it worked?" Alex asked, as though he were nothing more than a curious junior fascinated by the stories.
"It is. The Sword God specifically called for Her Majesty’s help when they realized that the Fiend was using Death energy to fight against the Undying God," he said.
"Were you there by any chance?" Alex asked.
"For a part of it," the man confessed. "But I didn’t know much about swords or techniques, so I left not long after." He looked toward Alex with a strange look. "You know, I didn’t expect you to be aware of such a thing from the past. How did you hear about this?"
"I read about it in the Wine God’s library. I wanted to learn more about the Death God considering my own Dao, so I checked the history books about her." Alex gave the prepared answer without any hint of a lie when he said it out loud.
The man accepted that story without any doubts.
"So you do not know about the techniques she prepared?" Alex asked.
"None whatsoever. Whatever techniques they landed on, only they knew since I didn’t involve myself at all," the man answered.
"Do you not like using swords?" Alex asked.
"I have no strong emotions about them either way," the man answered. "If you’re asking if I’m a swordsman, then I’m not."
"Oh. I have a sword with me that the first Artifact God made. I thought you might like it," Alex said.
"Well, I do not really care about any sword."
Alex didn’t trust him on that with his words alone. He had to be tested. So, the very next moment, he brought out a sword.
The final creation of Steelmind, the Artifact God, Godslayer’s vessel that now held Midnight, was brought before the old man.
The old man looked down at the sword, showing no emotion at first whatsoever. However, a few seconds later, he recognized the sword, and his eyes widened in shock.
