Chapter 615: Chapter 300: Mutants Are Harder to Deal With
"Looks like you’re in a pretty good mood today. You’re not even scolding me!"
Sun Yang breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back in his chair. "But seriously, this place feels even creepier than the last few. If the Insect Race really has command units, we’re probably up against more than just ordinary bugs!"
"What if they’re mutants?"
Shen Qiuyue suddenly spoke, her tone calm. "According to intel, the Insect Race here may have already adapted to our current weapons. Their mutants could be even harder to deal with."
"Then we’ll kill them one by one!"
Li Chang’an’s voice was hard and resolute. "No matter what form the Insect Race takes, they always have a weakness.
The key is, we have to be fast enough, and precise enough!"
"You make it sound so easy, Captain!"
Sun Yang shook his head. "Kill them one by one? What if a whole swarm comes? Can we really hold them off?"
"Whether we can or not depends on your performance!"
Li Chang’an replied calmly as he casually adjusted the transport’s communication equipment. "All units, on alert. Our objective is two hundred meters ahead.
Han Ruoxi, prepare to deploy the Electric Grid. Shen Qiuyue, protect Bai Lin. Sun Yang, provide covering fire!"
"Roger!"
The squad members replied in unison, quickly entering a combat-ready state.
The transport stopped before a stretch of ruins occupied by the Insect Race. The Insect Hunter Squad disembarked quickly, fanning out to their designated positions.
The air was thick with a heavy, foul stench, as if every breath was a gulp of putrid air.
"This place is disgusting!"
Sun Yang muttered under his breath as he set up his Pulse Gun. "Captain, can you put in for some hazard pay when we get back? Every minute in a place like this should be worth something!"
"Let’s see you make it back alive first!"
Han Ruoxi raised her hand and quickly deployed a wide-coverage Electric Grid on the ground.
Just as the Electric Grid was laid out, the ground suddenly began to tremble, and one by one, members of the Insect Race crawled out from the cracks.
Their carapaces shone with a metallic luster. They were larger than the common members of the Insect Race, and their movements were far swifter.
"Here come the mutants!"
Han Ruoxi yelled while releasing an arc of electricity that struck one of them. "Two o’clock, to the right! Five approaching!"
"Engage!"
At Li Chang’an’s command, he drew his Saw Chain Sword and was the first to charge into the swarm.
He swung his Saw Chain Sword, cleaving through a lunging insect at incredible speed. Green blood splattered, but he didn’t pause for a second, turning to face another one.
"Sun Yang, suppressive fire!"
Li Chang’an ordered loudly.
"Roger!"
Sun Yang braced his Pulse Gun and fired continuously at the swarm. Blue beams of energy sliced through the air, precisely striking the joints of two insects and successfully impeding their movement.
"Shen Qiuyue, protect Bai Lin!"
Li Chang’an continued to give orders while using his Saw Chain Sword to block a mutant’s sharp claws.
"Understood!"
Shen Qiuyue’s Dueling Sword flashed like lightning, cleaving an insect in two. She then spun around and decapitated another.
Her movements were clean and efficient, without a single wasted motion.
"The source of the interference is one hundred meters straight ahead!"
Bai Lin sat in front of the terminal, rapidly analyzing data. "I need one minute to disable it. Buy me time!"
"You’ll have your time!"
Li Chang’an sliced open the abdomen of another insect and turned his head to Han Ruoxi. "Block the rear passage! Don’t let the swarm get reinforcements!"
"Understood!"
Han Ruoxi quickly deployed a second Electric Grid and simultaneously unleashed a powerful arc of electricity, felling an insect that was trying to break through their defensive line.
"Bai Lin, faster!"
Sun Yang yelled while firing, "We can’t hold out much longer over here! There are more and more of them!"
"Twenty more seconds!"
Bai Lin didn’t even look up, their fingers flying across the terminal.
The swarm’s assault grew more ferocious, and the Insect Hunter Squad was locked in a fierce battle.
Li Chang’an and Shen Qiuyue joined forces, practically taking on three enemies each. Every swing of their swords carried lethal intent.
"Bai Lin, hurry!"
Han Ruoxi unleashed a wide arc of electricity, knocking back a section of the swarm, and shouted over her shoulder.
"Done!"
Bai Lin finally shouted. The signal interference icon on the terminal screen vanished instantly. "All units, fall back!"
"Fall back!"
At Li Chang’an’s command, the squad members quickly retreated, laying down covering fire for each other.
They fell back to the transport and scrambled aboard.
The transport’s engine roared to life, and it sped away from the battlefield.
The swarm gave chase for a distance but was ultimately stopped cold by the Electric Grid Han Ruoxi had deployed.
Inside the transport, everyone was panting for breath, drenched in sweat, their faces etched with exhaustion yet still resolute.
"Captain, this mission was even deadlier than the last one!"
Sun Yang leaned back against his seat, gasping for air. "Those things were at least twice as fast as before! If we hadn’t coordinated so well, we would’ve been toast!"
"Our coordination wasn’t good enough!"
Li Chang’an leaned back in his chair, his gaze sweeping over the team. "Bai Lin’s work was almost interrupted, and there were holes in Han Ruoxi’s Electric Grid deployment.
If we had to do that again, we might not be so lucky!"
"I’ll do better."
Han Ruoxi nodded and said quietly.
"Me too!"
Bai Lin answered softly, their gaze still fixed on the terminal.
"Sun Yang, next time you fire indiscriminately, I’ll leave you behind to provide cover for the Insect Race!"
Li Chang’an shot him a cold glance.
"Alright, alright, I get it, Captain!"
Sun Yang raised his hands in surrender. "Next time, I’ll control my fire. No more messing around!"
"Good."
Li Chang’an nodded and closed his eyes. "Rest up.
This is just the beginning. The missions ahead will only get harder."
「And so, some time passed.」
