Chapter 2038: Chapter 20: I Am the Princess Consort of Beiyan
The body of Wufu is just an outward shell that barely looks passable; inside, it’s in ruins. External injuries, internal injuries, coupled with the vital energy lost from childbirth, only a tiny bit of vigor and kidney yang is left.
If it were any other ordinary woman, she would have perished long ago. It’s remarkable that Wufu managed to give birth to the child, preserving both her and her child’s lives and still managed to reach populated places.
One doesn’t know whether to sigh for her resilience and courage or to pity her misfortune.
Upon hearing this, Lady Liang hastily said, "Doctor Cheng, what should be done now? Please prescribe some medicine quickly."
"A prescription is necessary, but the body needs to be nurtured slowly. This isn’t something that can be achieved overnight," Doctor Cheng replied.
"Thank you, Doctor Cheng," Wufu said with a smile.
Doctor Cheng nodded and said, "You’ve just given birth, but you haven’t had any proper postpartum rest. You need to recover well, otherwise..."
He didn’t finish the sentence, just furrowed his brows and said no more.
Wufu sensed the implication in his words but didn’t press further. She knew her own body well enough, but given the situation, there was nothing to be done.
Doctor Cheng wrote a prescription. Lady Liang asked Tantan to follow him to get the medicine, and she also instructed Sister Gui to kill a chicken for broth and stew two pig’s feet.
Wufu held her son, watching Lady Liang bustling around, a smile faintly tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"Xiao Qi, go and fetch some water to wash up," Wufu said, looking at Xiao Qi, who was also dirty and standing inside the room.
"Oh, I’ll go get your uncle’s clothes." Lady Liang handed her daughter over to Old Lady Zhou and rushed out in a whirlwind.
Inside the room, only Old Lady Zhou and Wufu remained.
"How did you end up in this state?" Old Lady Zhou asked with a frown.
Wufu pulled at the corners of her mouth, about to speak, when she heard footsteps outside. She looked up to see Zhou Xueli sweeping in like a whirlwind.
"Wufu, it is really you." Zhou Xueli stood in the main room, blinking with a mix of astonishment and joy.
Wufu stood up, holding the child, and made a curtsy: "Uncle."
"Ah." Zhou Xueli stepped forward a few paces, reaching out but a bit unsure, then he looked at the child in her arms and asked, "Who is this?"
"My son, his nickname is Little Bun." Wufu turned her son’s face toward him.
Zhou Xueli leaned in for a closer look, stunned at the child’s frailness, then looked at her complexion, hesitating to speak.
"It was by chance that I ended up in misfortune and returned here," Wufu said. "I will leave tomorrow."
"Leave?" Lady Liang entered at that moment and heard this word, so she glared wide-eyed: "You’re leaving now? How can that be? Didn’t you hear Doctor Cheng say you need proper recovery? You’ve had a premature birth; you need postpartum confinement."
Zhou Xueli’s heart jumped at the mention of premature birth, looking at Wufu. Another premature birth, just like her mother?
"Wufu, what’s going on? Why did you have a premature birth? Where is the child’s father?" Zhou Xueli asked.
Wufu pursed her lips slightly and looked at the several people, saying, "I have a compelling reason to leave."
"What reason?"
Wufu glanced at Lady Liang and then at Zhou Xueli, saying, "Beiyan and Nanyue are at war. You’re unaware, are you?"
Their words got caught in their throats; how could they not know? The two countries have been at war for two years, and the situation is worsening by the year. The Government Office has requisitioned grain twice; the Zhou family received their ration first in this village.
Even so, they were struggling to cope. If not for some land at home, their days would have been tough.
"Uncle, I am the Princess Consort of Beiyan. I have become what I am today because I am the Princess Consort of Beiyan," Wufu said to Zhou Xueli.
