Chapter 207: Chapter 199: You’re Not Their Cook
The Jin guard continued to crane his neck, peering outside. Spotting two figures, one tall and one short, approaching their small courtyard from afar, he immediately yelled, "They’re here, they’re here! Miss Bai is here." His eyes were glued to the cloth bundle on Bai Zhi’s back, and he said with a wide grin, "She’s carrying such a big bundle. It must be packed with lots of delicious food."
Meng Nan also stood up, craning his neck to look outside. Bai Zhi’s already slender and petite figure looked even more delicate walking next to Hu Feng.
"That girl is an excellent cook and isn’t short on money. How could she let herself get so thin?"
The Jin guard’s gaze fell on Hu Feng, and he snorted. "If you ask me, it must be that Hu Feng who gobbles up all the good food at home. Zhi is a fantastic cook, but I bet by the time she’s done, Hu Feng has eaten it all before she can even pick up her chopsticks. How could she not be thin?"
Meng Nan rolled his eyes. "Do you think everyone is like you? Always judging others by your own petty standards." ’Hu Feng might seem cold and aloof, but he’s not like that on the inside. We haven’t interacted much, but I can tell. He acts indifferent toward Bai Zhi, but in reality, he cares for her a great deal. He’s nothing like the person he presents himself to be.’
Bai Zhi and Hu Feng entered the courtyard, one after the other. She saw the master and servant pair eagerly waiting for her at the hall entrance. The Jin guard, especially, had his eyes fixed on her cloth bundle, his craving almost palpable. She suddenly realized that last time, she had brought egg pancakes, but today... she hadn’t brought a thing.
Bai Zhi gave a forced laugh and said to Meng Nan, "How have you been feeling these past few days?"
Meng Nan replied with a smile, "Pretty good. Aside from always being hungry, I feel fine."
The Jin guard couldn’t wait any longer. He rushed forward to take her cloth bundle, grinning from ear to ear. "You shouldn’t have! Just visiting is enough. Why bring things every time? It’s too much trouble for you; we feel so bad."
Bai Zhi slapped his hand away, her smile growing even more awkward. "Brother Jin, I’m terribly sorry. I left in a hurry today and didn’t bring anything. Next time, I promise I’ll bring you all something delicious."
The smile on the Jin guard’s face immediately froze. "What? You didn’t bring anything? Not even egg pancakes?"
Bai Zhi shook her head. "No."
RUMBLE— The Jin guard said nothing more, but his stomach’s protest was still loud and clear.
Meng Nan was disappointed too, but then he thought about how he and the Jin guard were behaving and found it amusing. ’We’re just like a couple of kids waiting for their parents to come home with candy.’
"Zhi, please don’t laugh. This guy, Jin Xiao’an, ever since he’s had your cooking, he can barely stomach the food from the government office’s kitchen. He knew you were coming today, so he got up early and hasn’t even had breakfast, just waiting for you to come and save him."
The Jin guard glanced sideways at Meng Nan. "Sir, you say that as if you ate the breakfast from the kitchen. I’m waiting to be saved, but aren’t you in the same boat?"
The greedy yet adorable antics of the master and servant pair made Bai Zhi burst out laughing. She had to hand it to them. "Alright, alright, it’s my fault. I’ve spoiled your palates. How about this? I’ll cook lunch today and make a few dishes for you. Hu Feng and I will stay for lunch and leave afterward. How does that sound?"
The once-dim eyes of the Jin guard and Meng Nan instantly lit up. They nodded furiously, repeatedly agreeing, and were just short of jumping for joy.
Hu Feng muttered unhappily, "What’s so great about it? You’re not their personal cook, why should you stay and make a meal for them? Don’t you have enough to keep you busy at home?"
