Chapter 184: Chapter 176: The 23rd Century, Lin Yang
’This has to be a dream. It must be. How is this possible? The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was... a flat panel light? One I recognized? The kind that only exists in the 23rd century?’
’What is going on?’ She inhaled deeply, and the scent of disinfectant filled her nostrils. It was a smell she knew all too well—the smell of a hospital room.
’This has to be a dream.’ But the sensation was too real. So real, in fact, that she could feel the cold liquid from an IV needle drip by drip into her vein.
Just then, footsteps sounded, seeming to approach her. She didn’t dare move, terrified that the slightest motion would wake her from this incredibly vivid dream.
"Professor Bai sure is unlucky. How could a one-in-ten-thousand chance like this happen to her?" A young nurse walked up to Bai Zhi’s bedside, glanced at the half-empty IV bag, and began writing in her notepad.
Another young nurse lowered her voice. "Well, I heard it wasn’t an accident."
"Not an accident? Then what was it?" The first nurse stopped writing and looked up at the girl beside her.
The girl glanced left and right. There was no one else in the room, but she kept her voice to a whisper. "I heard that someone cut the oxygen tube to her sleep pod, causing Professor Bai to suffer brain death from hypoxia during her soul travel."
"For real? Who would do something so despicable? Professor Bai is such a good person. She might seem a little strict on a normal day, but that was always for our own good. Whenever something went wrong, she shouldered the blame herself and always protected us. If it were one of those phony, hypocritical professors, they’d never stick up for us. They’d be thrilled to find someone else to take the fall."
"Tell me about it. It breaks my heart to see Professor Bai like this, but there’s nothing I can do."
"You think your heart aches? What about Professor Lin’s? He rushes over here three times a day. As long as he’s not on the night shift, he basically lives here. I even saw him crying once while holding Professor Bai’s hand."
The two chattered back and forth until someone entered from outside, at which point they quickly fell silent. "Professor Lin, you’re out of surgery already?"
A tall man wearing gold-rimmed glasses walked in and nodded at the two nurses. "Yes, I just got out." He went straight to the hospital bed, glanced at the ’unconscious’ Bai Zhi, and placed the first-aid kit in his hand on the bedside table.
"You two can get back to your work. I’ll take it from here," he told the two nurses.
The two nurses hurried away. He turned and went into the bathroom to shower, changing out of his white coat and into a clean, simple sweatshirt before sitting back down by the bed.
At first, Bai Zhi hadn’t dared to open her eyes. But then she discovered she couldn’t open them at all. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t even open her mouth. It was as if this body was no longer hers.
Lin Yang picked up a book and sat by the bed, reading for a while. He suddenly turned to look out the window. The once-bright full moon was now obscured by dark clouds, and the trees by the road were swaying violently in the wind.
He muttered, "Is it going to rain?"
He turned back to look at Bai Zhi. "You always hated the rain. I’ll go close the window so the sound doesn’t bother you."
Just as he stood up, a young doctor burst in from outside. "Professor Lin, quickly! The hospital director is having a heart attack and needs immediate surgery! You’re the only one who can do this operation. The OR is already prepped. Hurry!"
