Chapter 179: Chapter 171: The Young Miss is Petty
She ate breakfast first, then went to the kitchen. She pan-fried a few egg pancakes—Meng Nan’s favorite—and filled them with freshly stir-fried shredded potatoes before wrapping them up.
As she was heading out, Hu Feng saw she was carrying something. "What’s that?"
"Oh, just some egg pancakes. I couldn’t very well go empty-handed. They like them, and they’re simple to make, so I just whipped up a few," Bai Zhi said casually.
Hu Feng glanced coolly at the paper-wrapped bundle in her hand, said nothing more, and turned to get the horse.
The carriage moved slowly along the village road. With pedestrians about, the horse didn’t dare go too fast for fear of running into someone.
Just as the carriage was about to leave the village, a long line of people up ahead blocked their way.
Hu Feng’s voice was deep as he called out, "Make way!"
At the sound of his voice, the people turned. Seeing Hu Feng driving the carriage toward them, they hastily moved aside. As the carriage passed, the summer wind lifted the soft curtain, revealing a face they knew all too well. Her clear, bright eyes were watching them with what looked like a faint, mocking smile.
Liu spat in the direction of the speeding carriage. "Pah! What’s she so proud of? It’s just one shabby old carriage. Does she need to parade it back and forth through the village all day?"
Bai Xiaofeng, however, watched the carriage with undisguised envy. "If only our family could have a carriage like that." Out of ten of his classmates, eight of them rode to school in a carriage. Only he and the boy from the Lu Family had to walk, and they were often ridiculed for being poor.
Old Mrs. Bai watched the carriage disappear in a cloud of dust, cursing viciously in her heart. Her feelings were a complicated mix of hatred, resentment, and intense jealousy.
Liu said, "That little bitch is a real piece of work—completely ungrateful. Our Bai Family raised her for twelve years, and now that her life has gotten better, she just kicks us to the curb. Has she forgotten that we were the ones who gave her the Bai family name?"
Bai Dazhu said viciously, "Everything she has belongs to our Bai Family, including that carriage. We’ll take it all back, sooner or later."
Ms. Zhang really didn’t want to throw cold water on their plans. ’There’s no waking someone who’s only pretending to be asleep. No, a whole group of them.’
’If Bai Zhi were that easy to deal with, would the Bai Family have ended up in this state?’ she thought. ’They don’t even bother to use their brains. They couldn’t win against her even before she got involved with Lord Meng. Now that she has him as a patron, they still think they can touch her? It’s utter fantasy.’
’Of course, it’s always good for a person to have dreams. If they love to dream, then let them dream!’
After entering the city, the carriage went straight to the government office. The Government Official on guard outside was the same young man who had led her to Lord Meng last time. He recognized Bai Zhi at a glance and grinned. "Well, if it isn’t Miss Bai! The last time I saw you, you still had a few bruises on your face, so I couldn’t really tell what you looked like. Now that they’ve faded... I never realized Miss Bai was so beautiful. Even more so than our own young lady, I’d say."
Bai Zhi laughed heartily. "You’d better not say such things, big brother. If your young lady were to hear you, you’d be in for it."
The young man chuckled. "You’re right. Our young lady is rather petty. If she heard me say that, I’d really be in hot water."
The young man then asked, "Are you here to see Lord Meng, Miss Bai?" It was common knowledge in the government office that this Miss Bai had not only saved the young master’s life but had also cured Lord Meng’s face. Her medical skills were incredible.
