Volume 12 - Yomi-no-kuni: Chapter 135 – The Greatest Supreme God
“What…?” Wakarai, thrown through the air by a single strike, felt a deep numbness in the arm that held his spear. Gritting his teeth, he glared toward the distant sky with a smoldering, vengeful stare.
Kurorai and Lord Umashi had also been knocked back. Furious and humiliated, both cursed under their breath as they turned their hostile glares to the sky.
The dim skies split apart, the clouds torn asunder as the entire realm seemed to tremble in response. From beyond the rift, a towering black fortress soared through the air like a dark omen.
Enormous chains, thick as rivers, wrapped around the floating tower. Eight ancient demon gods—colossal beings tens of thousands of meters tall—bore massive stone pillars like inverted mountains embedded into their backs, anchoring the chains. These ancient deities now crawled across the wasteland like beasts of burden, dragging the castle through the skies.
With every thunderous step they took, the very earth of Yomi quaked beneath them.
Despite their sluggish appearance, the sheer scale of these demon gods meant the fortress they hauled was moving at astonishing speed.
Atop the castle tower stood a small, slender woman clad in unassuming dojo robes. One shoulder was bare, revealing a glowing demon god tattoo, while her waist was still wrapped in bloodstained bandages.
She gripped an ancient blade sheathed in a pitch-black scabbard. When she drew it with one hand, the blade itself shimmered in the same obsidian hue.
Lily, Queen Kaguya, and the others stared in silent awe. Even after everything she had seen in Yomi, Lily had never witnessed anything like this. A woman who could enslave eight abyss-born demon gods and have them carry a tower the size of a mountain—just who was she?
More astonishingly, each of the eight demon gods radiated a primordial aura that far surpassed Lily’s own. Some of them might have even outclassed Lord Umashi before they’d been defeated and bound.
Though they weren’t Supreme Gods in the conventional sense, they were ancient beings born from the primal darkness itself. In terms of physical might and endurance, they could even rival—or surpass—the typical Supreme God.
Though Queen Kaguya had been rescued, her expression remained taut with tension. Beside her, Chiya gripped both her and Lily’s sleeves. “Your Majesty, Lynne—we must leave now. If we don’t go this moment, we won’t get another chance.”
“Huh?” Lily blinked in confusion. They had just been saved by such a powerful entity—would it not be dishonorable to leave without offering thanks?
Wakarai and the other Supreme Gods gazed warily at the wounded figure standing atop the fortress. But rather than feeling relief at her apparent injuries, their expressions grew grave.
“Big Brother… I didn’t expect her to show up. Sometimes I’d rather face the Madam’s wrath than deal with her.”
“So what now, Little Brother? If the three of us team up, maybe we can take her down!”
“Maybe we could overpower her if we all attacked together. But that woman is an absolute lunatic—unpredictable and completely unbound by honor. We’d best avoid provoking her directly. Focus on Lily! If we capture her first, we might be able to use her as leverage!”
Without hesitation, the three Supreme Gods broke into a sprint, accelerating at terrifying speed as they charged straight toward Lily!
“What?!” Lily and the others were caught completely off guard as the three Supreme Gods surged forward with terrifying momentum. There was no time to think—only to brace themselves and try to defend.
With a low grunt, the girl atop the black tower moved. In a blur, she leapt into the air and slashed her blade, tearing open a jagged rift in space. Without hesitation, she vanished into the void.
At that exact moment, another black rift split the air open—right between Lily and the oncoming Supreme Gods. The young woman emerged from the rift, landing gracefully in front of Lily and the others, shielding them with her body.
“What?!” All three Supreme Gods were momentarily stunned—but they couldn’t stop now. Their attacks had already been unleashed, and there was no turning back. In unison, they launched their devastating strikes toward the young woman who stood defiantly in their path.
Despite her suspicions, Queen Kaguya instinctively cast a strengthening spell toward the mysterious girl, a gentle beam of light streaking across the air to aid her in the battle.
But just as the blessing was about to land, the girl abruptly turned her head—completely ignoring her enemies—and unleashed a pulse of dark sword energy, obliterating the spell mid-air.
“Who gave you permission?” she snapped coldly. “Stay out of this!”
With a flick of her sleeve-covered arm—a crushing wave of dark energy erupted from her, blasting both Queen Kaguya and Chiya through the air and sending them tumbling far from the fight.
“What is she doing…?” Lily stood frozen in disbelief. Was this woman mad? Did she not know friend from foe? Shouldn’t she be focusing on the three Supreme Gods instead of attacking the people who came to help?
Suddenly, a searing flash of lightning lit up the sky, blinding many of the surrounding demons.
Having turned away from the battle, the girl had left herself exposed. Wakarai’s lightning spear struck her squarely in the back, crackling with devastating force.
“No!” Lily cried out, heart racing with alarm.
As the blinding light faded, the girl merely stumbled forward, still levitating in the air. She knelt midair and calmly sheathed her pitch-black blade. Her slender back was marred by smoldering electric wounds—but she never once turned to face her attackers.
She laughed darkly, her voice low and mocking. “Hehehe… That’s all you’ve got? You call yourselves thunder gods? How embarrassing.” Despite her bravado, blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
“Wait—y-you’re hurt!” Lily called out in concern.
The girl looked up at Lily. Her fierce, warlike gaze softened in an instant—turning tender, even possessive. “Oh? You’re worried about me? How sweet… That’s exactly how a wife should be.”
“H-Huh?” Lily froze, caught off guard by the bizarre remark.
“You wretch!” Kurorai snarled. “You dare mock us like this?”
They knew she was dangerous—perhaps even monstrous—but they were Supreme Gods, entities revered across the realms. Their pride would not suffer such humiliation. Not from a single woman.
Wakarai, Kurorai, and Lord Umashi were instantly enraged. Without hesitation, they unleashed their full power and charged toward the young woman—who had dared to turn her back on them.
But the girl simply lowered her head and let out a low, trembling laugh. “This? You call this a wound? Compared to the eternal scar carved into me—one that will never heal—this is nothing. It doesn’t even scratch the surface of my pain.”
Dark energy surged within her eyes—and in an instant, the entire world was swallowed in shadow.
Lily’s vision went completely black, blinding her for a brief moment. When light returned, the young woman had already turned to face her foes. Her long dark-blue hair danced in the air, her sword already mid-swing. In that same instant, Wakarai, Kurorai, and Lord Umashi were blasted backward—deep, bleeding gashes carved into their chests.
“Fufufu… Den of Absolute Darkness.” The woman murmured softly, her bloodless lips barely moving as she elegantly returned her blade to its sheath.
Clang. The sword locked into place—and Lily’s heart skipped a beat. A pulse of chaotic energy erupted like a shockwave, distorting space itself across the entire battlefield.
Behind the three Supreme Gods—still reeling midair—three swirling black spheres appeared, like miniature black holes. The Supreme Gods had no time to react as they were pulled straight into them.
A low rumble echoed as terrifying waves of chaotic energy erupted within the black holes. The entire sky seemed to crack and spark as the three Supreme Gods writhed in agony, overwhelmed by the attack. They were forced to unleash their divine energy just to survive.
After several grueling seconds, the black spheres finally dissipated—revealing the three Supreme Gods, battered and bloodied. Though the injuries were mostly superficial, they had clearly taken a toll. Had they failed to defend themselves in time, the damage could have been fatal.
“Ugh… This… How is this possible…” Wakarai groaned. Though his injuries were shallow, he realized one terrifying truth—she hadn’t even gone all out. With just a casual strike, she had overpowered all three of them.
“Khh—” Lord Umashi coughed, blood trailing down his lips. He wiped it away, eyes filled with frustration. “Damn it… So the rumors were true. Imperial Princess of the Boundless Abyss… You’re even more terrifying than they say. I yield. For now.”
Even though Lord Umashi still had enough strength left to continue, the truth was undeniable: all three of them had been injured despite having the upper hand in numbers. And she hadn’t even taken them seriously. The difference in power was overwhelming—and worse, she seemed to be enjoying herself. With such an unpredictable and volatile opponent, one wrong move could mean annihilation.
Although Lord Umashi was lustful by nature, he still valued his life above his desires.
“Brother Wakarai, Brother Kurorai, I’ll pass on enjoying this exquisite beauty. Boundless Imperial Princess, you win this round! But how long can you keep this arrogance up? I may be old, but I’ve got all the time in the world! Hahaha… Tell you what—why not let me help take care of your wife in the future?” Though Umashi had no intention of continuing the fight, he couldn’t resist getting in a parting jab.
“Oh? Do you want to die before me?” The eyes beneath the Boundless Imperial Princess’ bangs suddenly flared with murderous intent—so fierce it sent tremors through the souls of even Supreme Gods.
“Agh!” Lord Umashi recoiled, his soul trembling as a cold chill raced down his spine. “W-We’ll see about that… in the future!”
Without another word, Lord Umashi turned and fled in panic, disappearing into the heavy clouds above.
“That cowardly old mutt!” Wakarai cursed. Without Umashi, they couldn’t even hope to defeat the Queen and her allies—let alone the Boundless Imperial Princess herself.
Wakarai glanced down at his still-healing wounds, irritation flashing in his eyes. He had expended precious divine energy—energy that took eons to replenish. Even for a Supreme God, the loss was infuriating.
“Big brother Kurorai, what now?” he asked bitterly.
Kurorai, no less battered than Wakarai, was equally frustrated. But even he didn’t dare to clash with the Boundless Imperial Princess again.
“As expected of the Boundless Imperial Princess. Even the Madam treads carefully around you. After today, you’ve more than earned your title as Yomi’s strongest Supreme God. My little brother never stood a chance against you. We’ve got nothing left to say. Farewell!”
Kurorai’s lightning-wreathed beard bristled as he turned away. A moment later, his colossal form vanished in a crackle of black thunder.
“Tch…” Wakarai gritted his teeth. With both allies gone, remaining any longer would only deepen his humiliation. He had been nothing but a stepping stone for the Boundless Imperial Princess to flaunt her might. With no other choice, he transformed into a streak of white lightning and fled, leaving behind only his frustration.
His subordinates promptly mounted their thunderbirds and followed in retreat.
With the retreat of the three Supreme Gods, the Boundless Imperial Princess slowly turned in midair. Her long hair flowed behind her as she cast her gaze downward—straight at Lily.
Lily looked back at her in awe. So this was the infamous Boundless Imperial Princess. Her strength was terrifying, her temperament unpredictable. Lily was grateful that the woman had fended off three Supreme Gods on her behalf… but the way she had treated Queen Kaguya and Commander Chiya left her wary. Just what was going on inside that woman’s head?
A short distance away, Queen Kaguya and Chiya slowly helped each other to their feet. The earlier attack had only slightly wounded Chiya, while the Queen remained mostly unharmed. Even so, they both wore the same expression—helpless and unsure of what would come next.
They had missed their window to escape. And now, it felt like leaving was no longer an option at all.
