Chapter 2694: Yuan’s Awakening

Chapter 2694: Yuan’s Awakening

"H-Hey! Stop!"

A startled cry rang out just as Yuan reached the exit.

When he turned around, he saw a frantic-looking nurse hurrying toward him.

"You can’t just leave without a word after waking up!" she exclaimed once she caught up.

Before Yuan could respond, the nurse asked, "Are you okay? Do you feel pain anywhere? Do you remember what happened before your collapse?"

"I’m fine. I don’t feel pain anywhere. And yes, I remember that I was leaving the house when I collapsed."

"Come with me. We need to examine your body again just in case."

"There’s no need. I am perfectly healthy."

The nurse frowned. "With that appearance? I don’t think so. General Mei also ordered us not to let you leave this hospital without her approval, so we’ll contact her and let her know you’ve woken up. Until then, you’ll have to stay here."

"Fine..."

So Yuan followed the nurse back to his room, where they thoroughly examined his body for any changes.

To nobody’s surprise, they didn’t discover anything new, and his condition appeared the same as the day he was discovered unconscious.

Meanwhile, Mei Feng was notified of Yuan’s awakening.

When she heard the news, she dropped what she was doing and headed to the hospital.

Some time later, Mei Feng met Yuan in his room.

"How are you feeling?" she asked.

"Perfectly fine."

"Have you looked in the mirror yet?"

"I have."

"And you still dare to say you’re perfectly fine? If the others saw you like this, they’d definitely question whether you were even human."

"I don’t know why my appearance changed like this, but I really am fine."

Mei Feng narrowed her eyes at him.

"Are you sure you have no idea? This happened right after you upgraded your Credential Rank, and considering that two of your anomalies have disappeared, I think we both know what caused it."

Yuan sighed.

"Yes, I treated two of my anomalies, and this was the result. However, I still don’t know exactly why it happened or why removing those anomalies caused such a drastic change."

Mei Feng fell silent for a moment before speaking. "I had some of the best doctors in our city examine your anomalies, but even they were completely stumped. According to them, your condition defied all logic."

"So, what now?" Yuan then asked.

"First, we need to change your appearance—revert it back to how it was."

"I don’t think I can control it."

"I wasn’t expecting you to," Mei Feng said as she retrieved a small, square-shaped chip about the size of her thumb.

"If you attach this to your body, it’ll create an illusion around you and alter your appearance in the eyes of everyone nearby."

"It’s extremely expensive and typically used only for covert missions, but this is a special occasion. Try not to damage it."

Yuan accepted the chip and asked, "Where should I put it?"

"Anywhere on your body is fine. Preferably somewhere hidden from plain sight and unlikely to be struck."

Yuan thought for a moment before attaching the chip to his lower back, just above his tailbone.

The chip activated immediately. Although Yuan felt no different, in Mei Feng’s eyes, his appearance had already returned to normal.

"Remember, it’s quite fragile, and it can even be damaged by water. A little sweat won’t hurt, but don’t submerge it in water, so take it off when you bathe."

"Anything else?"

"Do you have anything you need from me?" Mei Feng asked.

"Actually, I do. I was planning to find you before I collapsed. I’m ready to head to the Level 2 Black Zone, so I would appreciate it if you could get it approved as soon as possible."

"..."

Mei Feng stared at him with a baffled expression.

"You know you just woke up from a several-month-long coma, right? The Supreme General would never allow you to leave until he’s certain that you’re in a stable condition."

"Well, how do I convince him that I am fine?"

"You’ll have to ask him yourself. He’ll likely want to speak with you later."

Yuan sighed.

"Fine, then I’ll—"

Yuan suddenly paused.

"Wait. I’ve been unconscious for how long?"

"Almost half a year. Five months and eleven days, to be exact."

"I’ve been asleep for half a year?!" Yuan exclaimed.

"Even the dream wasn’t that long!"

"Dream?" Mei Feng raised an eyebrow before inquiring, "What kind of dream?"

"I was dreaming while I was unconscious. Uh... what was it about again?"

Despite his usually perfect memory, Yuan couldn’t recall the dream no matter how hard he tried, almost as if some unknown force was preventing him from accessing it.

However, although he couldn’t remember the dream itself, the emotions it had left behind remained vivid—pain, sadness, anger, regret. Most of them were overwhelmingly negative.

"Forget it," Mei Feng interrupted Yuan’s thoughts, dismissing its importance.

"Anyway, stay here for a little longer and wait for the Supreme General to summon you."

"What other choice do I have?" Yuan shook his head.

Before leaving, Mei Feng told him about the military’s current situation and the recruitment that had just ended.

"Oh? New recruits? Do you have a recording? It’ll help me pass the time."

Mei Feng nodded. "I’ll have it sent to you as soon as I return to my office."

Mei Feng left, and three hours later, someone delivered the recording to Yuan.

"How are you feeling?" Mei Xiaoyun, who was chosen to deliver the recording, asked him.

"I’m fine."

"Really? My mother refused to tell me anything about your condition."

"Because she didn’t want you to worry needlessly. Anyway, I am about to watch a recording of the recent recruitment. Want to join me?" Yuan said, quickly changing the subject.

"That’s what my mother had me deliver? A recording of the recruitment?" Mei Xiaoyun sighed after learning what it was.

She then added, "I’ll watch it with you. I didn’t get to see it live, and I heard there were quite a few promising talents this year. Apparently, one of them even came close to breaking your records."
