Chapter 622: Chapter 229: "Haunted" (2)
"See that? That’s what you call real skill!"
The old constable whispered to the others. He recounted the long-standing grudge between the Xv family and the Yan family with surging enthusiasm, his gaze filled with admiration whenever he looked at Xu Su Ying.
The younger constables, having only joined the county government in recent years, knew very little about the past. However, after standing outside the door for so long, they had heard everything—both what they were supposed to hear and what they weren’t. They now had a basic understanding of the bitter feud between the two families.
Armed with this context, listening to the old constable’s explanation made the outcome feel incredibly satisfying.
Every wrong would eventually face justice; it was never a matter of if, but when. And look—that time had finally come.
While Xu Shiling was mercilessly beating Yan Cheng, Third Ms. Bai snapped out of her daze and tried to escape through the window. The constables spotted her immediately and tied her up with ropes without showing a shred of mercy.
By this time, Yan Cheng had been beaten to an unrecognizable pulp. Seeing this, Xu Su Ying grabbed Xu Shiling and pulled him outside.
"Let’s leave it at this. Our past grievances are severed here and now. From today on, we will go our separate ways and lead entirely different lives. If we ever cross paths again, we’ll simply pretend we don’t know each other."
"He got off easy!" Xu Shiling said aloud.
In his mind, however, he was already plotting his next move. The next time he entered the palace, he was going to put on a tearful performance before His Majesty. Ideally, he could convince His Majesty to strip Yan Cheng of his official post entirely. A man who could leave his own fiancée to die and put on a hypocritical act for so many years was a complete fraud. Allowing such a deceitful and pretentious person to remain in officialdom would be a total disgrace to the court.
As it was getting late, the constables escorted Third Ms. Bai away.
Only then did the servants of the villa dare to step out of their rooms. Watching the constables disappear into the distance, they grabbed each other and began whispering excitedly.
"Is the esteemed daughter of the Xu family really still alive?"
"Didn’t you hear? She’s alive! She came in person to seek justice!"
"A clear conscience fears no midnight knock! Our Mister and Third Lady committed grievous sins. The moment Xu Su Ying dressed up as a ghost, they confessed to everything. Goodness me, I already knew Third Lady wasn’t a good person, but who would have thought our Mister was just as pathetic?"
"You might not have noticed the Mister’s hypocrisy, but I saw through him a long time ago. Hmph, anyone with eyes could tell that Third Lady wasn’t innocent, yet he still got involved with her and even had a son and a daughter with her. Do you honestly think he could be any better?"
The chattering gossip continued ceaselessly throughout the night.
At daybreak, as soon as the gates of the Capital City opened, the constables from the county government transferred Third Ms. Bai to the Capital Prefecture government office. The news of Xu Su Ying returning alive and dressing as a ghost to catch her attempted murderers exploded across the entire Capital City.
Who could have imagined it?
Who could have possibly imagined it!
A saga that people had gossiped about for twenty years suddenly had a sequel today. Better yet, it ended with the righteous returning with an unstoppable force while the wicked suffered their well-deserved retribution. It was immensely satisfying—truly a cause for celebration!
The name "Xu Su Ying" echoed through the streets and alleys once more. Along with it, tales of Third Miss Xu’s heroic and remarkable deeds from her earlier years were brought back to life.
Anywhere you went in the Capital City, you would hear bits and pieces of gossip about the Xu family, the Yan family, and Third Ms. Bai. It had reached the point where the scandal was known to absolutely everyone.
So, what was Xu Su Ying doing after accomplishing such a monumental feat?
She was sleeping!
She hadn’t returned until the dead of night. Upon her arrival, Chen Song had forced her to drink two bowls of ginger soup. She then took a hot bath and swallowed a medicinal pill to ward off any cold or fever.
She slept soundly in the warm, toasty room. Because there was a brazier burning silver frost charcoal, it actually got so hot that she ended up kicking her blankets off in her sleep.
Everyone knew she was exhausted, so no one dared to wake her. However, they truly couldn’t let her sleep any longer, because a very important guest was arriving!
Chen Wanqing went into her mother’s room to wake her up.
Xu Shiling, Chen Song, De’an, Zhao Jing, and Yao’an—every single one of them rushed to the entrance of the relay station.
Two carriages approached rapidly and stopped in front of the relatively grand and respectable relay station. Before the carriages had even come to a complete halt, the person inside impatiently lifted the curtain, eager to step out.
Startled, Xu Shiling hurriedly ran over to support the old lady.
"Oh, Mother, please slow down. Please be careful. My sister is right here in the relay station; she isn’t going anywhere. Don’t worry, just take your time."
The old lady had a round face, kind eyes, and completely white hair. She had shed so many tears over the years that her eyesight was severely damaged. Even standing this close, she could barely make out her youngest son’s face.
However, that didn’t stop her from swatting his hand away with unerring accuracy. "I’m not that old yet. I can still walk. Move aside and let me see my daughter."
At the word "daughter," uncontrollable tears suddenly welled up in her cloudy eyes.
The tears rolled down in a steady stream, tracing rapid paths down her cheeks before hitting the back of her hands—DRIP, DROP.
"I need to find my daughter. My Suying... Oh, my poor daughter..."
