Chapter 612 - 226: Knowing

Chapter 612: Chapter 226: Knowing

Xu Su Ying waved her hand dismissively. "Don’t ask what you shouldn’t ask. You’re sleeping in our room with your father tonight. I’ll sleep with Yao’an."

Chen Song patted his son’s shoulder. "You sleep in our room by yourself. Your mother and I will keep an eye on Yao’an."

Xu Su Ying didn’t argue. De’an knew arguing would be useless anyway, so the matter was settled, and everyone returned to their respective rooms to sleep.

Only Xu Shiling realized what was going on. With his vast experience and having raised several sons and daughters of his own over the years, a thoughtful expression appeared on his face as he pieced everything together. But this wasn’t the right time to speak of it. When it was time for them to know, his younger sister would tell them.

The entire courtyard was pitch-black, as if all had fallen into a deep, peaceful slumber.

But Zhao Jing was not asleep.

He sat on the edge of the bed, bathed in the moonlight streaming in from outside, looking down at the woman lying on the mattress. She must have been truly exhausted. She was sleeping soundly, still in the exact same position as when he had left the room. Her figure was as slender as ever, and in the dark of the night, her soft, gorgeous features still looked radiant and breathtaking.

However, the journey had clearly taken its toll. Looking closely, one could see that her lips were slightly pale and a faint shadow of fatigue lingered beneath her eyes. Zhao Jing’s heart ached fiercely at the thought that she was carrying his child, yet still had to endure the hardships of traveling.

He took her hand, rested it against his cheek, and gently caressed it.

The subtle movement awakened Chen Wanqing. Without opening her eyes, she reached out to feel for Zhao Jing. When she couldn’t find him, she fought off her drowsiness and forced her eyes open.

"Jing, it’s the middle of the night. What are you doing instead of sleeping?"

Zhao Jing’s voice was muffled. "Nothing. I’m just not tired right now."

Chen Wanqing murmured something, urging him to get back into bed and rest. Suddenly, a thought struck her. "Earlier, I heard some noise outside. You told me to keep sleeping and you got up to check, didn’t you?"

"Yes."

"What happened? Did intruders break into the inn?"

"It was nothing major, and it’s already been dealt with. Go to sleep first, Wanqing. I’ll tell you all about it when you wake up tomorrow."

"Alright. You should hurry and sleep too. We still have to travel tomorrow."

"Shiling said we’ll rest for a day tomorrow. You don’t need to rush to wake up, Wanqing. Just sleep as long as you like..."

He murmured a few more things, but he couldn’t quite remember what they were, and Chen Wanqing didn’t hear them anyway. His voice was soothing, and she was far too exhausted. The moment she closed her eyes, she fell back into a deep sleep within a single breath.

Noticing the prolonged silence beside him, Zhao Jing leaned over to look at her.

Sure enough, she was asleep again.

Her breathing was steady. Her long eyelashes cast delicate, dark shadows over her cheeks. Her posture was incredibly peaceful—and in his eyes, profoundly sacred.

Because of the commotion that night, everyone woke up late the following morning.

By the time Chen Wanqing woke up, the sun was already high in the sky.

It was a clear, brilliant day outside, with blindingly bright sunlight. However, the thick bed curtains tightly enclosed her little world, allowing her to enjoy an exceptionally restful sleep. When she first opened her eyes, a brief wave of panic washed over her. It wasn’t until she remembered Jing telling her last night that they would be resting for a day that her tense nerves finally relaxed.

Chen Wanqing sat up and grabbed her clothes from the foot of the bed. Just as she was about to put them on, the wooden door let out a loud CREAK. Someone walked into the room with unhurried footsteps.

She didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was. She was all too familiar with the sound of his footsteps.

Even so, she peeked out from behind the bed curtains and looked at Zhao Jing. "Are Father and Mother up? Why didn’t anyone wake me earlier?"

Zhao Jing walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. Taking the clothes from her hands, he began to help her dress, piece by piece. He had helped her like this plenty of times before. Usually, he would take the opportunity to sneak in a few wandering touches, his gaze burning so fiercely that it always made her heart race out of control.

But this time was different. Zhao Jing wore a deeply serious expression. His eyes were still intense, but they didn’t seem to hold the usual fiery intent she expected. She wondered what he was looking at and what he was thinking.

Chen Wanqing sat on the bed, quietly letting Zhao Jing put on her socks and shoes.

When Zhao Jing took her hand and prepared to lead her outside, Chen Wanqing suddenly asked, "Jing, did you have a pregnancy dream too?"

Zhao Jing froze. "You had a pregnancy dream, Wanqing? You already know you’re pregnant?"

Chen Wanqing nodded, then shook her head. "I had a dream like that before we set off, but I honestly don’t know if I’m actually pregnant or not." Catching the key word in his sentence, she quickly asked, "You think I’m pregnant too? Why would you think that?"

His face flushing, Zhao Jing recounted Xu Su Ying’s reminder from the previous night.
