Chapter 683 - 713: Sent to the Orphanage
Chapter 683: Chapter 713: Sent to the Orphanage
It was their landlord.
"You haven’t paid this month’s rent. When are you planning to pay me? Let me tell you, if you can’t come up with the money, you’d better pack up and leave."
Shen Zhenshan quickly forced a smile. "We’ve already found a new place. Can you give us two more days? We’ll be out by then."
The landlord gave him a skeptical look before finally saying, "Fine. I’ll give you two more days. I’ll be back to take back the apartment the day after tomorrow."
Once the door was shut, Old Mrs. Shen said anxiously, "We haven’t found a new place yet! Why did you tell him we did?"
Nearby, Shen Xiaoya picked up a half-rotten orange from the table and started to peel and eat it.
Shen Zhenshan said, "Remember that courtyard house we went to see before? It’s still empty. We can just move right in. I refuse to believe Shen Yi would have the gall to throw us out."
Old Mrs. Shen hesitated.
She remembered Shen Yi’s cold, ruthless demeanor and felt a twinge of fear.
Shen Xiaoya, however, thought for a moment and said, "Dad’s idea is great. We’ll just move in. There’s nothing Shen Yi can do about it. After we’ve lived there for a while, won’t the house basically become ours?"
Old Mrs. Shen said, "But the deed and all that is still in Shen Yi’s hands."
"Mom, we can worry about that later. The priority right now is finding a place to live."
The family had no money left. Their company had been shut down, their house had been seized, and the three of them were big spenders who never saved a dime.
On top of that, who knows where the hell Li Xiaomei had run off to, but she wasn’t looking after them anymore.
With nowhere to live, their only option was to take a desperate risk.
The three of them were huddled together, whispering and plotting how to squat in the courtyard house, when another knock came at the door.
Startled and with guilty consciences, none of the three moved to open the door.
But the knocking persisted, and the person outside clearly wasn’t leaving. In the end, it was Shen Zhenshan who went to open the door.
When he opened the door, he saw it was Aunt Sun, the woman who had previously been hired to care for Lin Nian and Shen Feng’s child.
Old Mrs. Shen immediately walked over. "Xiao Sun, what are you doing here?"
"Ma’am, you have to tell me... what am I supposed to do with this child?"
In her arms, Aunt Sun held the child of Lin Nian and Shen Feng. Shen Feng had been sentenced to prison, Lin Nian was rumored to have died somewhere far away, and their house in the Rose District had been seized.
The poor little girl was just over a year old, and to think, she didn’t even have a proper first name. Now, there was no one left to care for her.
Having cared for the little girl for several months, Aunt Sun had grown attached. She had gone to great lengths to track down Old Mrs. Shen’s family to see what they planned to do.
But Old Mrs. Shen’s reply was chillingly indifferent. "We can barely manage to survive ourselves. Who has the ability to raise her?"
"What? Then what’s supposed to happen to her? I have to go back to my hometown, and I don’t have the means to raise her either."
"Then just dump her at an orphanage."
"..."
Aunt Sun was stunned. She gazed down with immense pity at the sleeping little girl. The child was actually very easy to care for; ever since returning from the hospital after a serious illness, she was quiet most of the time.
’What a bitter fate for such a young child.’
Her own family wasn’t well-off, which was why she had left to work as a nanny in the first place. Now, she had no choice but to go back to her hometown.
After long and hard consideration, Aunt Sun finally took the poor little girl to an orphanage.
Meanwhile, a day later, Shen Yi received a call from the police station. They told him someone had tried to steal from his house and had broken a leg while climbing over the wall.
The officer on the phone added, "The suspect claims to be a relative of yours."
"Officer, regardless of whether they’re a relative or not, please handle the matter strictly according to the law."
"Understood."
