Shen Yi said, "I noticed your mom seemed a little down about letting the noodle shop go."
Qin Jiao said, "She’s just sentimental about it; after all, she built it up bit by bit. But we didn’t sell it, we just rented it out. If my parents want to run a small noodle shop again in a few years, they can go back and do it. Oh, and about the courtyard house—even though we’re not living there for now, we’ll have someone go maintain and repair it every so often. When we both retire, we can spend our golden years there."
Shen Yi smiled. "You’re still so young. Why are you already thinking about retirement?"
"I don’t plan on working until I’m sixty. Once I’ve worked hard enough, I’m planning to start my retirement at forty. By then, our child should be grown up and able to take responsibility for their own life."
Shen Yi nodded. "Mm, when that time comes, we can travel the world and just enjoy life."
If you work hard when you’re young, you can live more comfortably when you’re older. You can retire early, spend your days gardening, travel whenever you like, and maintain your physical and mental health.
This was, in truth, a rare opportunity.
It was a good thing they had both been reborn. They had avoided the mistakes of their past lives, started working hard early on, and even reaped the benefits of their foreknowledge. They certainly wouldn’t be poor in this life.
But a person had to know when to be content. If they threw everything aside just to make money and stayed busy until they were old, they would eventually look back and find they had nothing but cash. That would be a tragedy.
Fortunately, the two of them were on the same page.
After choosing a location for the tea restaurant, the next steps were renovation, promotion, and finding a pastry chef.
There were two avenues for finding a pastry chef. The first was through Shen Yi, who asked the manager of his company in the South to help look. The other was through Qin Zhonghui and Su Yun. They had worked in the South years ago and knew a few reliable friends who had been their coworkers at a restaurant.
It was a two-pronged approach.
Meanwhile, the restaurant’s renovation was in full swing.
After Shen Yi and Qin Jiao finalized the design style, he stopped letting her go to the construction site. She was pregnant, after all, and a renovation site could have a significant impact on the health of an expectant mother, or anyone who was frail or ill.
Qin Jiao, of course, knew not to push her luck. Although she had been constantly busy, she had also started reading books about pregnancy. Every time she went for a prenatal check-up, she made sure to remember all of the doctor’s instructions clearly.
Sometimes, when Shen Yi was busy and wouldn’t be home for lunch, Qin Jiao would go over to the neighboring residential complex. Her father, Qin Zhonghui, was busy, but her mother, Su Yun, was now free.
Old Mrs. Qin was living with Qin Na and her family, while Mr. Du was still living with Qin Zhonghui and Su Yun.
When Qin Jiao came over that day, only Su Yun was home. Xiao Shi was at school, Qin Zhonghui was out handling things for the tea restaurant, and Mr. Du had gone to a neighbor’s house to play chess.
After his health improved significantly, Mr. Du’s personality had also become more cheerful. Soon after moving into the complex, he had already become friendly with several of the other grandfathers in the area.
Among them was a man from the neighboring complex who used to live near the courtyard house. He was quite spry and would occasionally come over to play chess with Mr. Du.
Su Yun was preparing lunch. When she saw Qin Jiao arrive, she immediately went to the fridge, took out some chicken wings, and prepared to make an additional dish of braised chicken wings.
Qin Jiao said, "Mom, is your food usually this simple?"
A plate of scrambled eggs with scallions, a plate of sour and spicy shredded potatoes, and steamed rice.
