Chapter 599: Mortality Rate is 0
Chapter 599: Chapter 599: Mortality Rate is 0
"If it’s Captain Jacobs, it’s no surprise at all. She was already much stronger than ordinary people a few months ago," Marcus Miller said.
A few months ago, he, Beaumont Wallace, and the others had joined the escort team to the Bishop Clan. This time, they had signed up again.
"Yeah, you’ll get used to it. Hurry up and report," Crispin Coleman chimed in.
They had signed up again because they all agreed that following Nina Jacobs was safer than following anyone else. Plus, every trip outside was a valuable tempering experience.
When dawn broke the next day, everyone was surprised to find many zombie corpses lying outside the sand shield. Not far away, a few figures were killing zombies.
It was Holly Morgan, Holden Shaw, Ethan Young, and Wayne Warner.
Dozens of zombie corpses were already hanging from a Blood Vine that was several meters high. This scene looked particularly eerie in the misty morning.
After Holden chopped down the last zombie, he stretched and put away the two blades on his back.
"Warm-up’s over. Let’s head back."
Holden turned around, only to realize that quite a few people behind them were watching.
Holly waved her hand to retract the Blood Vine and walked back inside, completely ignoring the onlookers as if she hadn’t seen them.
"Ah, looks like we won’t have much of a chance to show off," Julian Wells remarked.
They had originally planned to wake up early and clear out a wave of zombies outside. They didn’t expect Nina’s people to beat them to it.
"Haven’t you noticed? We have to fight just for the chance to kill zombies on this trip. The people the senior brought are way too strong." Sylvia Shawn shrugged.
Before coming out, they had mentally prepared themselves to face a cruel reality. Yet, up to this point, they had been so relaxed it felt like they were on vacation.
Inside a room in the sales center, Nina handed a jar of moisturizer to the freshly washed Holly. "This isn’t Keldorn. There are zombies everywhere. You really didn’t need to get up so early."
"I... couldn’t sleep," Holly replied. Seeing the swaying shadows of the zombies outside, she couldn’t resist the urge to go out and slaughter them.
Nina was right. Along the way, zombies really did start appearing everywhere. However, there were no tense, desperate situations. Even after the convoy was attacked by zombies multiple times, the death toll remained at zero. Even the single person who was severely injured had been saved.
This was largely due to Adrian Paige’s tactics. Whenever they encountered a zombie attack, he didn’t send everyone out at once. Instead, they took turns in groups. Some were in charge of attacking, while others handled defense.
As the deputy commander, Nina would first block every fierce assault from the zombies for everyone. Then there was Julian and his group, who always showed up where the zombies were thickest...
After Sylvia killed an Intermediate Mutant Zombie with her Thunder Element Superpower, a small cut on her face instantly closed up thanks to her Healing System.
"So strong!" Aaron Lynch leaned against the window.
The Superpower Users from the City D Base each had their own unique characteristics. Watching the battle outside made his blood boil with excitement.
"It looks like South Riven is saved this time," Ivan Young said.
He had originally worried that the number of reinforcements might be too low, considering the potential casualties along the way. But now, his expectations had been completely overturned. Nina alone was equivalent to an entire defensive squad. Not to mention, she hadn’t even taken much action from the beginning until now.
As the convoy slowly started moving, Shirley Lucas asked, "What do you think of those few? They’ll be going to City A with you later."
"Sylvia and the others? They’re all quite good."
Nina already had a solid understanding of the team’s strength. From her observations, Julian and his three companions would take the initiative to protect the rescue team members, showing a fair bit of responsibility. However, Tyson Hughes was a lone wolf who seemed to only listen to Adrian.
Shirley laughed. "Their instructor is that guy Chester Pearson. Chester usually scolds them so much that even I can hardly bear to watch."
"He just has a sharp tongue but a soft heart," Nina said with a smile.
Chester had indeed asked her to look out for Sylvia and the other three. It was obvious that he was a good instructor.
Just then, Nina noticed that a section of the road ahead on the system map had suddenly turned gray. That color indicated a road anomaly. She was certain that just a moment prior, the road had shown a normal status.
Because she couldn’t warn them directly, Nina chose to have Adrian halt the convoy for a temporary rest a few minutes later.
"Hartley, has your Spiritual Element Superpower detected anything?" Nina asked. If there were zombies ahead, a Spiritual Element Superpower User should be able to sense them.
"Only a small number of zombies, nothing else," Hartley replied.
A small number of zombies shouldn’t cause a road anomaly. Could the things a Spiritual Element Superpower User couldn’t detect be small zombie animals?
At that moment, Marcus Miller ran over.
"Captain Jacobs, Five says he thinks he heard some kind of noise," Beaumont Wallace said from the side.
Nina’s eyes flashed, and she immediately ordered the group, "Tell everyone to be on high alert."
After absorbing the Mystic Ice Core at the Bishop Clan, Marcus’s hearing had become extraordinary. Her "Five Senses Enhancement" had also detected an anomaly just now, but it wasn’t a sound; rather, it felt like some kind of vibration.
"Isn’t Captain Jacobs being a bit too jumpy?" Tyson Hughes walked over and remarked. He had already scouted the surroundings with his Speed Element Superpower and found no danger.
Nina smiled and replied, "What if it’s a danger you can’t see?"
"Oh? Like what?"
As soon as Tyson’s voice faded, he immediately noticed a series of rhythmic impacts.
"Like... isn’t this it right here?" Nina pointed forward to a Diamond Sand Wall that had sliced through the road from top to bottom.
"What the hell is that?!" Beaumont noticed that there seemed to be something constantly wriggling beneath the road surface.
Seemingly realizing they couldn’t tunnel through the sand wall, those things finally dug their way out of the ground. They saw animals with sharp golden claws, roughly the size of fully grown large cats when standing, baring their fangs as they crashed into the sand wall.
"Mutated moles," Nina said.
In her past life, mutated moles were also known as Burrowers. Their front claws were like alloy shovels, capable of digging freely beneath the roadbed and hollowing out the soil. Of course, their purpose was to eat people.
"Have you seen them before?" Adrian asked. This was his first time seeing such a thing.
"Yeah. I’m afraid the road ahead has been destroyed by them. The sound Five heard just now was likely them." Nina didn’t answer Adrian directly.
Because these creatures lived underground, they hadn’t been infected by the zombie virus. However, it was a bit strange for them to suddenly appear here.
While they were speaking, a layer of liquid fire had rapidly coated the road surface and was spreading forward!
BOOM!
The liquid fire seeped underground, and the agonizing shrieks of the animals made Marcus clutch his ears in discomfort. But the screaming vanished completely after only a few seconds.
"This road... is actually completely hollowed out underneath?" Ivan controlled a massive boulder, dropping it onto the road ahead. Sure enough, the surface immediately caved in.
"We’ve seen these things in South Riven. Why would they show up here?" Aaron asked in confusion.
"Exactly, why would they appear here? And why have they only hollowed out this one specific section of the road?" Nina said pointedly.
"Someone lured them here," Adrian concluded after hearing Nina’s words.
