Chapter 585: Planting Evidence and Shifting the Blame
Chapter 585: Chapter 585: Planting Evidence and Shifting the Blame
"Thank goodness we got the Soul-Attracting Butterfly first. Plus, since they’re suspecting that scumbag right now, they shouldn’t trace it back to you anytime soon," Sherry Renner said.
She could tell that the Ainsworth family was not simple; their influence might be massive. She had already found out that the individuals carrying the Soul-Attracting Butterfly didn’t arrive at the base with the Veridians. They came to the City D Base later. However, this at least proved that the Ainsworth family was connected to the Veridians.
"Yes, but it’s only safe for the time being. Have you found out where these people came from?" Nina Jacobs asked.
"South Riven Base," Sherry replied. They claimed they had come from the South Riven Base this time.
"It seems highly likely that the Ainsworth family is located there." Nina remembered this base. During the Superpower User Tournament at the City D Base, the Base Commander of the South Riven Base had visited. Moreover, the South Riven Base wasn’t too far from the City D Base and was connected by a direct road.
"What do you plan to do next? Head to the South Riven Base and wipe out their nest?" Sherry asked.
Nina glanced at her and said, "Your method sounds ruthless enough and gets it done in one step, but what if that isn’t their nest?"
Sherry pondered for a moment; it was indeed as Nina said. Attacking them at the South Riven Base would only alert the enemy. As for what to do...
"Since they suspect Liam Grant, we need to hammer that suspicion in completely." Nina’s eyes were dark, making it impossible to read her emotions.
She hadn’t known that Liam and Justin Stone knew each other. Justin asking Liam to help him find a hiding place was probably intelligence left behind by Chloe Ainsworth. Therefore, after locking onto the City D Base as the location of Chloe’s killer, they naturally associated it with Liam. Coupled with the fact that Orion Thorne found out Liam wasn’t at the base those two days, their suspicions deepened.
"Sounds great. Just say the word if you need my cooperation," Sherry said, giving Nina a thumbs-up. There was nothing safer than framing someone else.
The night grew deep.
The outdoor chill became even more biting at night. The roads inside the base were completely empty of people. At this moment, a nimble little zombie rat darted swiftly across the rooftops through the darkness. It finally stopped on the roof of a house. There were rows of installed solar panels, and the little rat squeezed through a gap, finding an excellent vantage point. Looking down from this angle, it could see everything in the courtyard and even the situation outside the door. The two people inside the room noticed absolutely nothing.
Hannah Grant looked at Liam sitting at the desk. She yawned and asked, "We finally get a chance for a good night’s sleep today, and you’re still not sleeping?"
"I can’t sleep. Don’t bother me." A flash of impatience crossed Liam’s eyes.
"I’m just caring about you, okay? Now it’s just the two of us siblings left here. When are you leaving for City A anyway? This City D Base doesn’t suit us at all," Hannah said.
"When I go to City A, you’ll stay here temporarily. Once I gain a foothold over there, I’ll come back to pick you up," Liam answered without looking up.
Hearing this, Hannah furrowed her brows immediately. "Do you think I’m a burden? Why can’t I go with you? Or is it that you and Renee Strong have planned something else without telling me? I didn’t even know about you communicating with Justin Stone from the Riventon Base today. You don’t treat me like a sister at all!"
"Hannah, that’s enough! If it weren’t for your nonsense today, I wouldn’t have had to admit to that matter. I really shouldn’t bring you to any important events!" He regretted it so much. After Hannah heard that Adrian Shaw was going to be the chief interrogator, she had begged him relentlessly to take her along. Although Adrian had clearly rejected Hannah long ago, she still hadn’t given up. He just hadn’t expected her to run her mouth in a place like that.
"I... I was just trying to get you off the hook. Besides, what does it matter? Those people have already been caught anyway. They don’t pose any threat to you anymore," Hannah argued.
"Then what do you want Adrian and the base to think of me? I only contacted Justin to leave us an extra way out in the future. The more people who know, the more dangerous it is. Now that Justin is missing, this backup plan is completely ruined."
"I know. Just take me with you this time. I promise I won’t cause you any trouble," Hannah pleaded.
"We’ll talk about this later. Tomorrow, you need to go with me to the South District Cemetery. Over the next few days, we’ll try to retrieve the supplies we’ve hidden everywhere. You should go to sleep early," Liam said, rubbing his tired eyes.
At this moment, a faint sense of regret arose in his heart. He wished he hadn’t gone to save Hannah back then. However, he quickly suppressed this thought.
From their conversation, Nina could also tell that Liam indeed had contact with Justin.
"It seems he was casting a wide net. Still... getting a good night’s sleep?" Nina chuckled.
She planned to leave the little rat at Liam’s place permanently. She suspected that the people tracking Liam weren’t just Orion and his group sent by the Ainsworth family. Just as Orion had said, they had been at the City D Base for less than a month. Yet, Liam claimed he had been tracked for a month. This meant it was possible someone else was secretly tailing him. She believed the duration of this tracking should probably be even longer...
Leo Hale had been full of regret these past two days. He hadn’t followed Nina into the Falken Base, so he missed seeing how Nina used her superpower to intimidate Kael Dolan.
Fortunately, Nina planned to take everyone in the Stellarys Team on an outing today. Moreover, Ian Chandler would be tagging along this time. He said he wanted to practice killing zombies. The members of the Stellarys Team were all thrilled. They really wanted to see the power of Nina’s Three-System Superpower.
Ian waited outside the family’s door early in the morning. However, Nina walked out of Building 73.
Wayne Abbott and the others would also be going on the outing, so she had specifically asked Hartley and the rest to help keep an eye on the house’s security. As long as the matter with Chloe remained unresolved, she couldn’t afford to let her guard down. Although Holly Morgan also wanted to tag along, Nina turned her down. The frostbite on Holly’s body had only just healed, and according to Harlan, the fracture in her wrist wasn’t fully recovered yet. Thus, Holly had no choice but to drop the idea.
"I heard the zombies over in the South District have been increasing recently?" Nina asked from inside the car.
Ian nodded. "They really have. The rescue team just returned from there yesterday, and rumor has it they encountered a few Intermediate Mutant Zombies." That was why he immediately asked to tag along when he heard Nina and the group were heading out to the South District to kill zombies today. Plus, he also wanted to see her Three-System Superpower.
"I remember the South District connects to the South Riven Base. Warren used to live around there," Wayne Abbott said as he drove. Warren Ramsey used to be a freight driver in the South District.
"That’s right, Abbott. It’s the South Riven Base," Ian replied. "But Nina, where exactly are we going in the South District today?" he asked curiously.
"I’m not sure. We’ll just see where we end up. I heard the area around the cemetery is quite open, which makes it suitable for killing zombies," Nina replied with a smile.
