Chapter 482: Going Again
Chapter 482: Chapter 482: Going Again
Anselm Hughes’s execution was quickly scheduled.
It was set for that very day.
Nina Jacobs gave Mirelle Keller and the others time to vent their anger.
After she finished discussing matters with Reinhard Caldwell and the others, she found that Anselm Hughes had already been tortured beyond recognition.
He was barely clinging to life.
"I won’t let you go, even as a ghost."
Anselm Hughes said, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
"I think you should pray you’re just annihilated."
When the time for the execution arrived, Nina Jacobs personally executed him in an open area outside the gates of Tomorrow Base.
Watching Anselm Hughes burn in the roaring flames, Mirelle Keller wiped away her tears.
"Thank you, Nina Jacobs."
Mirelle Keller said.
Nina Jacobs had promised to help her get revenge, and she had delivered.
"Don’t mention it."
Nina Jacobs replied.
[System Notification: Host’s actions will save 14,373 humans in the coming days. "Selfless Savior" title triggered. Reward: 14,373 bottles of Healing Potion!]
The system’s notification chimed.
This was the main reason she had wanted to execute Anselm Hughes herself.
’Over fourteen thousand people... most of them are probably the remaining survivors in Lornwood Base.’
That night, Tomorrow Base was brightly lit until dawn.
"Those guards have all surrendered to our base. As for whether they can join the city defense soldiers, they’ll still need to pass an assessment."
Felix Finch reported as he walked beside Nina Jacobs.
"Mm, waive the assessment for all of Grim’s and Valerius Lucas’s people. And make sure we gather comprehensive information on every city defense soldier."
’An army is crucial to a base. I should build this one up as much as possible before I leave.’
"Understood. Tomorrow is the first day of the Lornwood Base transfer. I heard you’re going too?"
Felix Finch asked.
"I am."
Nina Jacobs said with a nod.
’There are a few things I want to confirm.’
The next morning, Nina Jacobs arrived outside the base bright and early.
After all the commotion at Tomorrow Base yesterday, a new wave of zombies had arrived after dusk.
But Felix Finch had already led his men to clear them all out.
Hundreds of off-road vehicles and trucks were now parked outside the base gates. These were the vehicles Anselm Hughes had used in his siege, and they had all been marked with the Tomorrow Base logo.
The base had also seized six tanks, various ground-emplaced artillery, and a large quantity of ammunition.
"Nina Jacobs, we’re all ready!"
A group of people ran over, led by Theseus York and Zachary Sterling, the inmates from Team 1 she had met in the Correctional Pod.
When Theseus York and the others escaped to Tomorrow Base, they didn’t know Nina Jacobs’s identity. They only found out after she returned a few days ago.
After arriving at Tomorrow Base, they had formed their own independent squad and had applied for a spot on the mission to Lornwood Base to help transfer the survivors.
Of course, there would be a base point reward after completing the mission.
Nina Jacobs was surprised to see Dominic Sloan among them as well.
"Heh heh, we all came from the same place. It feels especially good to see familiar faces out here."
Zachary Sterling explained. He was the one who had let Dominic Sloan join their team.
"I never got the chance to thank you for that night."
On the night of the chaos in the Correctional Pod, it was Nina Jacobs who had let him escape.
A while ago, Dominic Sloan had even thought about secretly returning to Lornwood Base to check on Nina Jacobs.
He never would have guessed that Nina Jacobs’s true identity was the leader of Tomorrow Base.
"You’re welcome. By the way, do you guys know anything about Ms. Carter’s background?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
"Ms. Carter? The registrar?"
Zachary Sterling shook his head.
They only knew Ms. Carter was one of Anselm Hughes’s subordinates. They didn’t know anything else.
"Nina Jacobs, why are you asking about this?"
Theseus York asked.
Nina Jacobs shook her head and said, "I’m just curious about who she is, and why Anselm Hughes trusted her so much."
’And where did that poison Ms. Carter gave out come from?’
During her fight with Anselm Hughes the day before, Nina Jacobs had confiscated a bottle of poison from him.
It was the same type of poison that had appeared in the Correctional Pod, which left people unable to use their Superpowers.
’A poison that can specifically target Superpowers... it’s highly suspicious.’
Meanwhile, things were not peaceful inside Lornwood Base.
News that the zombie virus was in the base’s newly activated water pipes sent the entire base into a panic.
The pipes ran through every room in the base, and even underground.
Chrysanthe Abbott stood by the window, watching the chaos outside.
Before, she had wished for Lornwood Base to disappear, but now that it had finally descended into chaos, she felt a deep sense of confusion.
"Mr. Crawford, it looks like this place is about to fall apart."
"I just wonder how that girl is doing."
Noisy clamor came from all sides outside her door.
She turned around and spoke to the funeral portrait on the coffee table.
Ever since Nina Jacobs came to ask about Jared Crawford that night, she had remembered her words.
She had told her to wait.
But she didn’t know what she was waiting for.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Chrysanthe Abbott froze for a moment, then hurried to the door when she heard the voice outside.
"Miss Abbott, I’m here."
Seeing that Chrysanthe Abbott was thinner but otherwise unharmed, Nina Jacobs felt a sense of relief.
Jared Crawford’s daily work reports had been a great help; it was because of them that she had decided to infiltrate the Correctional Pod and investigate.
Otherwise, she would have been completely lost in Lornwood Base.
Though Jared Crawford was long gone, she hadn’t forgotten her promise to Chrysanthe Abbott.
"The man who attacked Mr. Crawford was named Montague. Although he was acting on orders, his actions were vile. But I’ve already had him scattered."
Nina Jacobs said.
"Scat... scattered?"
Chrysanthe Abbott didn’t understand at first.
"Burned to ash."
Nina Jacobs explained.
Montague had been one of her opponents in the fighting tournament, and she had brutalized him in front of everyone.
She hadn’t come to see Chrysanthe Abbott before because she was afraid of being discovered back then.
"Miss Abbott, the main culprit, General Hughes, has also confessed to his crimes, and I’m here today to take you to Tomorrow Base."
Nina Jacobs said.
Visiting Chrysanthe Abbott was another reason she had come to Lornwood Base today.
After all, she had made her a promise.
"I’m just an old woman. Why would I go there and use up resources? You’ve already fulfilled my and Mr. Crawford’s greatest wish. You don’t need to worry about me anymore."
Chrysanthe Abbott refused Nina Jacobs with a smile.
However, about ten minutes later, she had packed a few things and was following Nina Jacobs downstairs.
It was because Nina Jacobs had mentioned that Tomorrow Base was short-staffed and hoped she could come and help out.
After temporarily entrusting Chrysanthe Abbott to Wayne Warner, Nina Jacobs went to the administration building of Lornwood Base.
In the lobby of the administration building, many people were squatting with their hands on their heads, being interrogated while trembling in fear.
"Nina Jacobs, we couldn’t find the ’Ms. Carter’ you mentioned."
Tristan Lynch said, running over.
They had searched the entire building but hadn’t found the person Nina Jacobs had asked them to look for.
"You didn’t?"
Nina Jacobs realized she was too late.
However, she still managed to find Ms. Carter’s residence.
Ms. Carter lived alone in a small building.
The building was empty, but all her belongings were still there, indicating the owner had left in a great hurry.
In one of the rooms, Nina Jacobs found several more porcelain vials.
"How exactly is this drug concocted?" Nina Jacobs muttered to herself.
Then, in the pocket of a piece of clothing inside the wardrobe, she found a letter.
It was a letter of introduction, written by the Hughes Family Headquarters to Anselm Hughes.
’Ms. Carter is from the Hughes Family Headquarters?’
The letter was from the Hughes Family Headquarters, introducing Ms. Carter to Anselm Hughes and stating that she would help him.
