Chapter 446: Each with Their Own Ulterior Motives
Chapter 446: Chapter 446: Each with Their Own Ulterior Motives
The moment Cecily Wells rushed out, Nina Jacobs immediately fed Godfrey Thatcher a bottle of "Healing Potion."
The "Healing Potion" couldn’t cure the zombie virus, but she tried it anyway as a last-ditch effort.
However, there was still no notification from the system for the "Selfless Savior" title.
This meant Godfrey Thatcher was not out of danger yet.
It wasn’t just Nina Jacobs; Wayne Warner also seemed very concerned about Godfrey Thatcher’s condition.
He stood beside Godfrey Thatcher, frowning as he watched him.
But Godfrey Thatcher just laughed. "Man, remember what I told you earlier today?
These days, you never know if disaster is waiting for you just around the corner.
It’s just... this is a pretty pathetic way to go...
If I make it out of this alive, I’m never fucking driving for these scumbags again..."
"You haven’t turned yet. Don’t be so quick to give up."
Nina Jacobs said, walking over.
Although the juice was confirmed to contain the zombie virus, Godfrey Thatcher had only taken a small sip and wasn’t yet showing symptoms like nosebleeds.
She knew the chances were slim. The zombie virus’s assault on the human immune system was incredibly potent, but she still urged Godfrey Thatcher to try and hold on.
"It’s fine. It doesn’t matter if I die,
I just used to dream of being a great hero who saves the world, heh heh..."
As he spoke, Godfrey Thatcher started to cry.
Just then, a bottle of cola appeared in front of him, offered by Wayne Warner.
"You didn’t drink any of it?
It’s a waste on me. This is the last bottle from your space, you should keep it."
Seeing Wayne Warner’s insistence, Godfrey Thatcher could only give a wry smile, twist open the cap, and drink it.
Nina Jacobs had never seen Wayne Warner be so patient with anyone else.
She took out some emetics and laxatives and had Godfrey Thatcher take those as well.
After taking the medicine, Godfrey Thatcher locked himself in the bathroom and stayed there.
It wasn’t until dawn the next day that Nina Jacobs received the system notification for triggering the "Selfless Savior" achievement.
She guessed Godfrey Thatcher must have pulled through.
Arcadia White was very surprised when she saw Godfrey Thatcher again.
"You’re still alive?"
Arcadia White looked Godfrey Thatcher up and down in astonishment.
"Yes, I am."
Godfrey Thatcher replied.
"That’s a good thing. It just proves you have a decent constitution."
Arcadia White’s flippant remark made Godfrey Thatcher clench his fists.
However, he showed no outward sign of his anger, simply getting into the car as usual and driving it to the courtyard gate.
Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner had saved his life.
After hearing that Nina Jacobs was planning to go with Arcadia White to Whittaker Town, he decided to stay for the time being and only consider leaving after she and Wayne Warner returned.
General Hughes also seemed to know what happened last night.
When the group emerged, he was still comforting a crying Cecily Wells. His expression soured further when he saw Arcadia White leading their daughter by the hand.
He grabbed Cecily Wells by the wrist and strode toward the mother and daughter.
"Look at the child you’ve raised!
Cecily Wells is a member of my Shadow Legion! How can you indulge our daughter to this degree?"
Arcadia White hadn’t expected her husband to berate her so publicly and was momentarily stunned.
"Julia Hughes, apologize to Cecily Wells!"
General Hughes ordered.
"I’m not apologizing! They wouldn’t play with me!
Mommy said I can play however I want, and it doesn’t matter even if people die!"
As soon as Julia Hughes finished speaking, the color drained from the faces of everyone around them.
SLAP! The General’s hand struck Julia Hughes’s face again.
"Anselm Hughes! How dare you hit my daughter!
Have you forgotten who gave you everything you have now? The Shadow Legion was established by the Whites,
and your main Hughes Family line is just a declining clan! By what right do you do this!"
Arcadia White spat, pointing an accusing finger at General Hughes.
But General Hughes didn’t fly into a rage out of humiliation. He simply sneered.
"The White Family has so many members, yet only a handful are Superpower Users. Aside from Flynn White, who can rival me, the rest are just hired muscle.
Did you really think that with Ambrose White dead, anyone would still give your branch of the family a second glance?
Without me, you and our daughter would be eaten alive!"
With that, General Hughes took Cecily Wells by the hand and left.
Arcadia White’s face turned livid. She remained silent, even after getting into the car.
Julia Hughes, as if sensing she’d caused a disaster, didn’t act up for the rest of the trip.
Later, when they encountered another horde of zombies, General Hughes signaled for Nina Jacobs to get out and help. Nina and Wayne Warner then exited the vehicle.
"Nina Jacobs, I heard she asked you to go with her to Whittaker Town?"
the General asked, all while using his Superpower to cut down zombies.
The "she" he was referring to was, naturally, Mrs. White.
"Yes. I haven’t given her an answer yet."
Nina Jacobs replied.
After everything that had happened, Mrs. White seemed to have forgotten all about it.
’Or maybe she never intended to ask for my opinion in the first place...’
"You can go, but if you listen to everything she says, I’m afraid..."
"I’ll follow your orders, General Hughes."
Nina Jacobs replied, cutting him off.
General Hughes seemed relieved at this and said,
"To be honest, I just hope that one day you’ll become my right hand.
You have the most potential of anyone here."
"For now, you’ll still need to protect her and her daughter’s safety, but I’ll do my best to have you and Wayne Warner transferred to my side later."
Nina Jacobs listened to the grand promises General Hughes was making and nodded.
’Judging by their earlier argument, there must be different factions within the White Family at Whittaker Town. And right now, Arcadia White’s branch is relying solely on General Hughes.’
’General Hughes is probably worried that if Arcadia White wins me over, it’ll threaten his own position.’
’That’s why he wants to keep me firmly under his thumb.’
’This married couple... each is playing their own game.’
Sure enough, once the zombies on the road had been cleared out and Nina Jacobs was back in the vehicle, Arcadia White asked her what she had decided.
"I’m willing to go to Whittaker Town."
Nina Jacobs replied.
"Good. I knew you’d agree."
Arcadia White smiled.
’Even if Nina Jacobs hadn’t agreed, she had other methods.’
The journey took a total of three days. It wasn’t until the afternoon of the third day that the group arrived near the place Godfrey Thatcher had mentioned, Rivenhall.
The area was littered with corpses, but they were all zombies.
Seeing this, Arcadia White’s face lit up. "It must be people from the White Family, here to meet us!"
Sure enough, after Arcadia White got out of the car with Julia Hughes in tow, a group of people approached from a distance.
The man leading them was somewhat older, and he quickened his pace as soon as he saw Arcadia White.
"Arcadia, where is your brother, Ambrose White? Did something happen to him?"
the man asked with a frown.
Arcadia White’s face turned deathly pale. "Uncle, Ambrose is dead."
"Dead? How could he have died?
Didn’t he go to the base?"
Raymond White asked in disbelief.
"Ambrose did come to the base, but something happened there, so..."
General Hughes explained, walking over.
"Anselm Hughes, what did you do?
Ambrose went to back you up because he heard you were injured. How is it that you’re perfectly fine, but he’s gone?"
A figure appeared on a rooftop to the right.
Nina Jacobs glanced over. ’No wonder I kept feeling like someone was watching us.’
’But how did these people know something had happened to Ambrose White?
Do they have some special way of sending messages?’
"Flynn, you’re here too,"
Arcadia White, not expecting Flynn White to be here, quickly said, "Listen to me, what happened to Ambrose really has nothing to do with Aiden..."
Before Arcadia White could finish, a gust of wind whistled through the air, and in the next instant, Flynn White was standing firmly before them.
