Chapter 421: Unflustered
Chapter 421: Chapter 421: Unflustered
"Ma’am, we should be heading back," an older woman said, walking over from the side. "The young miss is about to wake up."
"Yes, Ms. Abbott... Don’t you think... this world is a bit too unfair?" Arcadia White said, gazing at Anselm Hughes’s retreating back.
"Why can some people have a Dual Element Superpower, while Evelina and I are just ordinary people?"
"Well..."
Hearing Arcadia White’s words, Ms. Abbott was momentarily at a loss for a reply.
"Superpower Users look more vibrant and youthful, but ordinary people have to endure all sorts of illnesses and infections, and we age faster, too..."
Arcadia White caressed her face, which was no longer smooth.
She was not a Superpower User.
Neither was her daughter.
But Anselm Hughes had already become the only Intermediate Superpower User in all of Lornwood.
His face and body grew healthier and more vigorous by the day.
Anselm Hughes was already four years younger than her to begin with.
Now, when she stood next to him, they looked like they were from two different generations.
"Ma’am, you’re overthinking things. Besides, you had half your blood replaced for the family’s sake before. That would naturally take a toll on your body. If you just rest and recuperate properly, you might recover."
Ms. Abbott coaxed her gently.
"And you still call the shots on the lives of most Superpower Users in the base."
After hearing Ms. Abbott’s words, Arcadia White felt a little more at ease.
But then she suddenly said, "What if I could make that Dual Element Superpower User obey me completely? Wouldn’t Aiden become even more inseparable from me then?"
A glint of excitement appeared in Arcadia White’s eyes.
"You mustn’t, Ma’am! The White Family’s ancestral teachings say one person can only control one puppet at most! Otherwise, not only will it severely harm your body, but there’s also a risk of losing control."
Ms. Abbott hastily advised.
"You’re right. But if I can’t, there’s still Evelina," Arcadia White said.
"But the young miss is still so young! How could she..."
Ms. Abbott’s words were drowned out by the sound of the convoy starting up.
Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner were assigned to the second-to-last vehicle in the convoy.
As for the last, sealed vehicle, it contained several dozen "decoys."
General Hughes’s vehicle was at the very front.
Behind his vehicle were three escort team vehicles.
And behind them were nine transport trucks.
The driver of their truck was surprisingly a young woman.
The woman greeted the two of them with a warm, friendly smile.
"Hello, my name is Cecily Wells. I’ll be your driver today," Cecily Wells introduced herself.
Nina Jacobs nodded.
The woman’s demeanor could easily make one lower their guard and feel a sense of closeness.
However, the moment Nina Jacobs saw Cecily Wells, she was on alert.
In that photo of the Shadow Legion, one of the women standing at the very front looked very similar to the Cecily Wells before her.
But Cecily Wells was sitting now, and the photo had been somewhat blurry, so she couldn’t be certain.
"This is my first time meeting a Dual Element Superpower User. You’re so amazing," Cecily Wells said in a tone full of admiration as the truck slowly started to move.
"How far is it from here to our destination?" Nina Jacobs asked instead.
Cecily Wells was taken aback for a moment, but she still replied with a smile:
"I’m not too sure, either. But I can secretly tell you where the destination is. They must not have told you any of this, right?"
"Right," Nina Jacobs replied.
’This Cecily Wells seems to be trying every trick in the book to get close to me.’
"I heard that our destination today is Mirewood Station. But I also heard you’re not from Lornwood, so you probably don’t know where Mirewood Station is, right?" Cecily Wells said.
"No, I don’t."
And Nina Jacobs truly didn’t know.
But sitting in the back, she had already pulled up her system map.
According to the system map, if their destination really was Mirewood Station, it would likely be dark by the time they arrived.
Just then, the intercom in the truck crackled to life.
It was General Hughes.
"This is one of our regular routes. We’ll be crossing a large bridge up ahead. We need to inspect the bridge deck before crossing, but I’ve already reinforced that bridge..."
Anselm Hughes was explaining the precautions over the intercom.
"Your mission today, besides familiarizing yourself with the route, is to observe how I handle unexpected situations if they arise... The reason we don’t use Space Superpower Users for transport is because there have been too many bad precedents... Do you have any other questions?"
Anselm Hughes spoke at length, and when Nina Jacobs remained silent, he even thought the intercom was broken.
"Not at the moment," Nina Jacobs replied.
’He wouldn’t tell me what I really want to know anyway.’
"You certainly are composed. Actually, there’s another reason I’m leading the team today. A team that set out a few days ago was almost completely wiped out en route. The cause is unknown."
Since the supplies on the transport trucks were untouched, it was determined to be a zombie attack.
"The reason I chose you is that I hope you can help me find out the cause today."
With that, Anselm Hughes ended the transmission.
Nina Jacobs’s reaction was so mild that it made him sound like he was just giving a work report.
In the same vehicle, a few members of the Shadow Legion were displeased. One of them, Drake Shaw, grumbled:
"Did Ms. Carter make a mistake? Can this woman even do the job?"
"Exactly. She looks scared stiff to me. Hope she doesn’t drag us down later..."
"That’s enough."
Anselm Hughes cut them off.
"The supplies we’re transporting today are of the utmost importance. I’m on this run, so there can be absolutely no mistakes."
"Yes, sir!"
The men in the vehicle answered in unison.
’The most important supplies?’
Hearing this, Nina Jacobs’s eyes showed a flicker of interest.
Wyatt Holden had only shown her the underground tunnel; she hadn’t been authorized to enter the loading area at the other end.
’What exactly is in these trucks?’
Cecily Wells glanced at Wayne Warner, who had been eating ever since he got in the truck.
"This guy here... I heard he’s a Strength Element Superpower User. Is he your bodyguard?"
"You seem to have heard quite a lot."
Nina Jacobs’s words made Cecily Wells’s heart skip a beat.
General Hughes had told her to observe Nina Jacobs, but she seemed completely different from the previous team leaders.
Before, all it took was a few casual words from her, and those people would treat her as one of their own.
But Nina Jacobs... she couldn’t see through her at all.
"Just focus on driving."
The moment Nina Jacobs finished speaking, a loud crash erupted from up ahead.
’Here they come.’
A smile touched her lips.
According to her system map, the road for at least 300 meters ahead was completely blocked.
Of course, she wouldn’t tell anyone.
"Zombies! Everyone stay calm! Nina Jacobs, guard truck 13! Everyone in vehicles 1 through 4, get out and engage!"
General Hughes ordered.
Truck 13 was the last supply truck.
Nina Jacobs looked at the "decoy" vehicle. It was parked quietly at the very end, completely sealed.
To keep up appearances, she still got out of the truck with Wayne Warner.
The two of them began to leisurely kill zombies.
She took the opportunity to check the situation up ahead.
"They seem a little tough to deal with," Nina Jacobs said with feigned concern.
’There are probably over two thousand zombies up ahead. With an Intermediate like Anselm Hughes there, and I heard nearly 300 people from those four vehicles, there shouldn’t be any major problems. Just some casualties, that’s all.’
As the screams grew more frequent, gunfire also erupted.
Cecily Wells seemed worried, constantly poking her head out to look ahead.
She was also keeping an eye on Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner, and saw that the two were coordinating to kill zombies.
"It takes two of them to kill one ordinary zombie? She doesn’t seem so tough after all," Cecily Wells muttered.
’It seems Lornwood Base really is fresh out of powerful people.’
