Chapter 2217: Leaving The Inner Court

Chapter 2217: Leaving The Inner Court

Grey, Reynolds, Void, and the bunny leader flew back to the large orange-leafed tree. The Half-God leaders were still inside. Sir Astarot, the two Thunderbird leaders, the Fox, the green Lizard, the white Ape, and the Toad Clan Leader all turned as they entered.

The silver Thunderbird’s pale eyes studied the two young men for a moment.

"Two full weeks under the lightning tree," she said. "That is longer than most can endure. Both of you held up better than expected."

The blue Thunderbird gave a short nod of agreement, though its expression remained as sharp as ever. Sir Astarot looked mildly pleased.

"The results show," the old Dragon said. "Your auras are more stable than when you entered."

The Toad Clan Leader said nothing. Its purplish rectangular pupils rested on Grey with clear dislike, but it did not speak. The Fox watched with quiet interest, while the Lizard and Ape simply observed the exchange.

Sir Astarot moved the conversation forward. "The materials are ready. Most of the Clans have already delivered theirs."

The Fox still held its storage ring. After a brief glance at Grey it tossed the ring over to join the rest. The Lizard and Ape had handed theirs in earlier. The Toad’s materials sat with the others as well, placed there without comment.

Grey examined the gathered resources and the rough map of the Inner Court that Sir Astarot had prepared. Fifteen locations in total, carefully chosen so the major Clans could reinforce one another quickly if another large-scale attack came.

"I’ll begin with the Thunderbird array and the nearest cooperative sites," Grey said. "After that I’ll continue according to the route I’ve decided."

The Toad Clan Leader finally spoke, its voice low and rough. "My territory is the closest to this one. It is only logical that you build mine next."

Grey did not look up from the map. "I’ll follow the order I’ve already planned."

The Toad’s eyes narrowed. "You would fly farther first when a closer site is available? That is a waste of time."

"I have a sequence in mind," Grey replied evenly. "I’ll stick to it."

The Toad’s aura stirred, heavy with displeasure. The pressure in the tree thickened for a moment. Before it could push harder, Sir Astarot’s calm voice settled over the group.

"He is the one constructing the arrays. The order is his to decide."

The Toad gave a short, ugly snort but did not argue further. The implication was already clear to everyone present. Grey had no intention of prioritizing the Clan whose leader had once tried to devour him. The Fox’s mouth twitched slightly, as if it found the situation amusing. The Lizard and Ape remained silent.

Work began that same day.

Grey set up the first teleportation array inside Thunderbird territory with practiced efficiency. The process required careful placement of the core materials, precise inscription work, and repeated stabilization of the spatial channels. He moved methodically, checking each line of the formation twice before locking it in place. Reynolds and the bunny leader assisted with the heavier components, carrying prepared stones and essence crystals into position. Void watched from a high branch, tail flicking, occasionally offering comments that no one had asked for. By the time the first array fully locked into place and the spatial link stabilized, the light filtering through the canopy had already shifted.

Over the following days Grey moved steadily across the Inner Court. He completed the arrays at the Fox Clan, the Lizard Clan, and several other strategic points in a continuous stretch of work. Travel between sites remained short and purposeful. At each location the local Clan provided the prepared materials and a cleared site, then largely left him to the construction. Some Clan leaders observed from a distance. Others simply confirmed the work was done and left. Piece by piece the network took shape. Territories that had once been isolated from one another gained the ability to reach each other in moments instead of days.

Reynolds stayed with him throughout. The spar under the lightning tree still sat between them in an easy, unspoken way. Reynolds made no effort to hide that he had enjoyed winning, sometimes rolling his shoulders with a faint grin when he thought Grey wasn’t looking. Grey treated the result as simple information and did not bring it up. Void spent most of the journey either sleeping on Grey’s shoulder or complaining about the lack of interesting food in the deeper parts of the forest. The bunny leader remained practical, helping with measurements, testing spatial stability, and keeping lesser beasts from wandering too close to the unfinished arrays.

Sir Astarot joined them for parts of the route, mostly to ensure the more distant Clans cooperated without delay. His presence alone was enough to prevent minor complications. The old Dragon said little about the Toad’s earlier demand, though once, while watching Grey finish an array far from the Toad’s territory, he remarked quietly that some matters were better handled without unnecessary favors. Grey only nodded and continued working.

The days blurred together in a rhythm of travel, construction, and short rests. Each completed array added another solid link to the growing network. Grey could feel the spatial channels settling into place, connecting points across the Inner Court in a way that would matter the next time the Gnomes tried a coordinated assault.

By the time only a few arrays remained, the pattern was obvious to anyone paying attention. The Toad Clan’s site had been left for the end.

When they finally arrived at the Toad Clan’s territory, the atmosphere was colder than at any of the previous stops. The land itself felt heavier, and the lesser toads in the area kept their distance. The Toad Clan Leader was already waiting near the prepared site, its expression locked in permanent dissatisfaction. Several of its subordinates stood farther back, silent.

Grey offered no explanation and no greeting beyond what was necessary. He simply began the final construction. The work took the same careful time as the others. He laid the core materials, inscribed the linking patterns, and stabilized the spatial channel step by step. Reynolds stayed close, more from habit than real concern, while Void sat on a nearby rock and watched the Toad with open dislike. The bunny leader helped with the last measurements in silence.

The Toad observed every step without speaking. Its earlier arrogance was tempered by the practical knowledge that the array itself was still valuable. When the last inscription locked and the spatial channel fully stabilized, Grey stepped back and checked the formation one final time.

"It’s done."

The Toad stared at the finished array for a long moment. The air around it grew colder.

"You left this for last on purpose."

Grey met its eyes without flinching. "I followed my plan."

There was nothing more to say. The Toad’s aura flared once in clear irritation, then slowly settled. It needed the array more than it needed the last word. With a final cold glance at Grey, it turned and left the site, its subordinates following in silence.

Sir Astarot, who had remained at a distance during the exchange, flew closer once the Toad was gone.

"All fifteen are complete," he said. "The network covers the major Clans of the Inner Court. If the Gnomes attempt another large push, the response time will be far shorter than before. This will change how the Clans support one another."

Grey nodded. The work had taken continuous effort across several days, but the result was solid. The Magical Beasts now had a practical way to reinforce threatened territories without relying solely on long flights or delayed messages.

"I’m finished here," Grey said. "We’ll be leaving the Magical Beasts’ Forest soon."

Sir Astarot studied him for a moment, eyes steady. "The Gnomes will not forget what you did in the Thunderbird territory. Be careful once you step outside the forest’s range. Their attention on you will only grow heavier."

"I know."

Reynolds stretched his arms, lightning faintly crackling under his skin. "Finally. I was starting to think we’d be building arrays until the war ended."

Void yawned and flicked his tail. "As long as the next place has better food. This forest is running out of things worth eating."

The bunny leader said nothing, but its ears turned toward the distant edge of the Inner Court, already oriented for the next movement.

Grey took one last look at the finished array, then at the vast canopy stretching beyond the Toad Clan’s land. The Magical Beasts’ Forest had given them the lightning tree, a completed network of arrays, and another set of complicated relationships. It had also reminded him that old grudges among the powerful did not disappear just because a common enemy existed.

It was time to move on.

Somewhere beyond the forest’s borders, others were already waiting for the moment he left its protection. Grey did not know their faces yet, but he could feel the shape of the coming trouble in the same way he had felt the strange distortion of space on the Thunderbird battlefield. The quiet period would not last.

He turned toward the outer range of the Inner Court.

"Let’s go."
