Chapter 416: Chapter 215: Sharing a Ride
"Right, what about that Golden Egg?"
Lin Mo suddenly remembered something.
"It should still be... No, that’s not right... It shouldn’t be in the Lawrence Clan’s hands anymore."
Flora trailed off, then suddenly shook her head and changed her tune.
"Otherwise, there’s no way these Goblins would be attacking Lania City."
Indeed.
Back then, the Goblins had immediately chosen to retreat after a fierce wave of attacks failed to breach Silver Stream City’s defenses. That in itself was strange.
Although they had successfully repelled the Goblins—with Lin Mo even managing to kill a Silver Goblin—Silver Stream City’s overall losses were still substantial. The Goblins’ losses, on the other hand, aside from that one Silver Goblin, were largely within an acceptable range.
If the war had continued and the Goblins had launched a second attack, Silver Stream City’s situation would have become even more dire.
The Goblins must have thought so too at first, which is why, despite their temporary retreat, they didn’t pull back very far, merely regrouping to rest and recover.
But then, for some unknown reason, they suddenly chose to pull back even further, completely leaving Silver Stream City’s territory.
And after that, following a few days of rest, they launched their attack on Lania City.
A strategic shift like that wasn’t something the Goblin Commander would decide on a whim; it was most likely influenced by some other event.
Lin Mo’s train of thought had stopped there at the time. Now, looking back and combining it with the information from Flora, it was highly likely that the event was the Goblins getting back the Golden Egg that Lawrence had taken from them!
But how did they manage that?
Lin Mo pondered for a moment before a question suddenly struck him.
"That Necromancer... he hasn’t shown up in a long time, has he?"
Back on the battlefield between the Goblins and Silver Stream City, he had even sent some Undead to aid the attack. But Lady Flora had been prepared for this, hiring an Adventurer Group from a major city beforehand and easily neutralizing the Undead Creatures’ assault.
After that, the man seemed to have vanished.
But was that really the case?
Although the Goblin Army had retreated and the intervention of the Undead Creatures had yielded no results, post-battle investigations revealed that a significant number of the bodies—of soldiers who died in the Goblin siege, as well as the Guards and civilians from the surrounding towns—had been secretly taken away by the Goblins amidst the chaos.
The logic was easy to follow: a collaboration between that Necromancer and the Goblins.
Therefore, that Necromancer was the only true winner in this war!
Perhaps because he realized Silver Stream City wasn’t so easy to conquer, or perhaps fearing the Auswiss Clan behind Lady Beixila, the Necromancer, after earning himself enough corpses from the Goblins’ first wave of attacks, took out the Golden Egg he had already stolen from Lawrence and returned it to the Goblins as a bargaining chip to continue their partnership.
And so, Lawrence and Lania City, having lost the crucial leverage of the Golden Egg, logically became the next target for those two parties.
After all, even an idiot knew that attacking Lania City was far easier than attacking Silver Stream City.
As for whether anyone would come to help, whether the city could ultimately be conquered, and what Lawrence’s fate would be—none of these things mattered to the Necromancer.
All he needed was a sufficient number of corpses!
Clearly, he had achieved his goal.
Casualties from this disaster in the Lania City region numbered in the tens of thousands. Never mind all of them—if even half, or just a third, fell into that Necromancer’s hands...
Lin Mo now understood why Necromancers were called public enemies of humanity.
While all of this certainly stemmed from the greed of Lawrence and the Morin Clan, the Necromancer’s manipulation of them and the Goblins was undoubtedly the true, dark, oppressive storm cloud hanging over these two border cities.
However, they simply didn’t have the energy right now to hunt down this "cockroach" hiding in some unknown corner. The most important thing was to resolve the immediate crisis and bring a complete end to this Goblin disaster.
"It’s about time to go."
Their exchange of information complete, Lin Mo stood up and returned to the adjacent room.
Ali was already awake. Shefilya heard his footsteps and opened her eyes as well. Only Feney was still lost in a hazy slumber.
But she couldn’t be blamed for oversleeping. As a Priest, Feney was responsible for providing Healing. She had cast far too many Healing Techniques along the way. While her Magic Power could be replenished with Magic Potions, the fatigue and strain on her Spirit were not so easily relieved in a short time.
So Lin Mo chose not to wake her, instead gently lifting her into his arms.
Outside, Landon and the others had already brought the carriage to the inn’s entrance.
The road ahead was extremely dangerous, so Alton and Bain would not be continuing with them.
They would remain in the town for the time being to help defend against potential follow-up attacks from the Goblins. They could also provide support to the nearby villages and aid the villagers there.
Bain and his group had no plans to leave the town and develop elsewhere. As for Alton and his group, they had already established a new home in Silver Stream City where their families now were, so they would likely return there.
